Juventus are returning to their defensive roots as the club looks to reinforce its backline for the future. With the permanent signing of Pierre Kalulu from Milan already secured and Gleison Bremer expected to return from injury, the Bianconeri are actively working to reshape their defence. La Gazzetta dello Sport report that the standout name on Juventus’ radar is Leonardo Balerdi, the 26-year-old Argentine and captain of Olympique Marseille.
Balerdi is highly regarded by Juventus’ new coach Igor Tudor, who previously managed him at Marseille and values his tactical intelligence and versatility. Balerdi can operate across all positions in a three-man defense—central, right, or left—making him a valuable asset for a team seeking flexibility and depth. His Italian passport also means Juventus would not need to use a non-EU slot for his registration.
The defender’s leadership qualities and experience at Marseille, where he has become a key figure and captain, have caught the attention of both Juventus’ new management and technical staff. Balerdi’s adaptability and composure on the ball make him an ideal fit for Tudor’s tactical plans.
Negotiations, however, will not be straightforward. Marseille are reluctant to part with their captain, especially with Champions League football on the horizon. Balerdi is under contract until 2028, and his transfer value is estimated to be significant. Juventus, though, benefit from strong relationships with Marseille’s management, including sporting director Mehdi Benatia, a former Juventus player, and president Pablo Longoria, who previously worked for the Bianconeri.
Juventus’ defensive overhaul may not stop with Balerdi. The club are also monitoring young Italian talents such as Giovanni Leoni of Parma and Pietro Comuzzo of Fiorentina, aiming to add further youth and depth to the squad.
While competition for Balerdi’s signature is fierce—Roma is also interested—the synergy between Juventus and Marseille’s leadership gives the Bianconeri a solid starting point.
