Juventus and Tudor Eye New Wingbacks: Dodo, Wesley, and Piquerez on the List

Juventus are preparing for a significant overhaul in their squad this summer, with head coach Igor Tudor identifying the need for reinforcements on the flanks. While earlier statements from within the club suggested that only two or three targeted signings would be sufficient to make the team competitive, the reality of the transfer market and the squad’s current needs are pushing Juventus toward a more ambitious recruitment drive.

The Search for Versatile Wingbacks

Il Corriere dello Sport report (as quoted by IlBianconero) that Tudor has made it clear that the team requires a new wide player capable of contributing both defensively and offensively—a key component for his tactical setup. With the futures of Timothy Weah and Samuel Mbangula uncertain and the club prioritizing the permanent signing of Francisco Conceição, Juventus are actively looking to add at least one more wingback to their ranks.

On the shortlist are three main targets:

  • Dodo (Fiorentina): Dodo has long been monitored by Juventus scouts. The Brazilian full-back is currently in a contract standoff with Fiorentina, with his deal running until 2027 but no renewal in sight. Fiorentina are reportedly seeking at least €25 million for his transfer, a significant but not prohibitive sum for a player of his profile.

  • Wesley (Flamengo): Wesley França has emerged as one of the most promising full-backs in South America. Juventus see him as a long-term investment who could make an immediate impact. Flamengo value the 21-year-old at around €30 million, reflecting his status as a rising star and his strong performances in Brazil and the Club World Cup.

  • Joaquín Piquerez (Palmeiras): Piquerez presents a more affordable option. The Uruguayan international, a key player for Marcelo Bielsa’s national team, has a contract expiring next year. Palmeiras are asking for €15 million, making him an attractive alternative if deals for Dodo or Wesley prove too costly.

Strategic Considerations

Juventus’ approach is shaped by both necessity and opportunity. The club’s roster requires upgrades in several areas, and the ongoing uncertainty surrounding key players like Dusan Vlahovic means that more than just two or three signings may be needed. Tudor’s assessment, reinforced by recent matches such as the Club World Cup tie against Manchester City, highlights the need for greater depth and tactical flexibility on the flanks.
