Matteo Moretto Talks Juventus and Yildiz, Gila and Tonali

Italy football journalist Matteo Moretto recently shared his insights on the evolving strategy at Juventus during a special episode on the Juventus-focused channel Juventibus. His comments, focused mainly on the club’s new management approach under Comolli, paint a picture of a more reserved and calculated Juventus moving forward.

Moretto opened by highlighting Comolli’s very private style: “Comolli grants very little to journalists.” This silence is part of a deliberate method from the new leadership, aimed at maintaining focus away from media distractions.

Discussing the upcoming January transfer market, Moretto explained: “I think starting from the second week of December, we will begin to see some more concrete names coming out, because Juventus, like other clubs, wants to have some solid options on the table by early January — not closed deals, but advanced negotiations.” He noted that Juventus has a history of finalising transfers late, mentioning recent examples with players Kolo Muani and Vlahovic, who only started playing for Juventus in February following these late moves.

Moretto described the club’s current stage as a transition: “I’ve been observing Juventus from abroad, especially through the Spanish football lens. Juventus still holds a strong allure internationally, alongside Milan and Inter, but last season’s results have somewhat affected its sporting appeal.”

He praised Comolli’s pragmatic philosophy focused on free transfers: “We see Juventus changing approach. The focus is on zero-cost signings — this comes with risks but also opportunities.” Moretto suggested that this strategy requires patience and a realistic outlook on squad building.

When asked about Juventus’ pursuit of defensive reinforcements, Moretto revealed: “Juventus is evaluating profiles, mainly central defenders from the Premier League. Comolli has strong Premier League connections.” He mentioned names linked with Juventus in other contexts, such as Guéhi and Lazio’s Gila, underscoring that many discussions are still in early phases.

On the topic of Juventus’s midfield and leadership in the squad, Moretto observed: “Spalletti is looking for players with personality — not only skill but leadership on and off the pitch. Juventus has good players but needs more leaders in the dressing room.”

With regards to the midfield, Moretto stated: “The Old Lady’s ideal goal would be to bring in an Italian midfielder from the National Team and in the summer there was a lot of buzz about Tonali, But if they have to shell out a significant amount for the players they are targeting, they’ll only do so in the summer; in winter they’ll only pounce on market opportunities.”

Regarding player contract renewals, Moretto commented on key cases like Vlahovic  and Kenan Yildiz: “The Vlahovic situation is more complicated, with relations between the player and the club’s management still tense. As for Yildiz, Juventus is continuing talks with his mother, who manages his affairs, and I expect updates before the end of the season.”

Moretto also addressed forward planning for next summer: “Juventus plans a specific screening for centre-backs in June, preparing for potential departures like Vlahovics’. If Vlahovic leaves, Juventus will likely sign a forward replacement.
