Former Juventus defender Mark Iuliano believes the Bianconeri are on the right path under Luciano Spalletti but insists the club must strengthen their midfield in January to maintain momentum. Speaking in an interview with TuttoJuve.com, the ex-centre-back discussed Juventus’ progress, the need for reinforcements, and his thoughts on several key players.
“It’s a good Juventus side, at times even an excellent one, that I’ve seen in recent weeks,” Iuliano said. “They know how to stay compact on the pitch, they’re good at getting results, and above all, a defensive leader like Gleison Bremer has returned. Spalletti is doing a great job.”
“Bremer’s return and Yildiz’s rise have made the difference”
When asked what impressed him most lately, Iuliano pointed to renewed energy and standout individual performances. “The enthusiasm. That’s what stands out. And the individuals are doing well too. People talk too little about it, but Bremer’s return is huge for the confidence he gives the defence. Yildiz is reaching top levels — he has personality, and most of Juventus’ best moves now start from him. He’s also finding consistency in front of goal.”
However, not everything is perfect. “João Mário? I can’t say much since I haven’t really seen him play — though I’d be curious to. Adzic, on the other hand, is hugely talented but hasn’t played much lately. A loan would make sense if it helps him get more minutes.”
“Spalletti needs midfield reinforcements”
On Juventus’ ambitions, Iuliano stressed the importance of January. “The goal for Juventus is to win as many games as possible. The next few matches, starting with Pisa, look favourable. Fourth place is vital, but we’ll see where they stand in March or April. Some teams have deeper squads, but the transfer window is close — something can still be done. I hope Spalletti gets what he wants in midfield because they desperately need a player there. I wouldn’t rule out bringing in a wing-back either.”
“Ederson and Palestra would be ideal signings”
Asked who he would like to see join, Iuliano didn’t hesitate. “I’d want players with true Juventus quality — but they’re expensive. It’s always hard to make big signings in January since clubs rarely let their best players go. Still, if I could choose, I’d go for Ederson — though it’s hard to imagine Atalanta letting him leave — and Palestra from Cagliari, who’s having a fantastic season. With those two, Juventus could really start to make their mark in the league. Their ambitions would definitely change.”
“McKennie should be renewed — Vlahovic too”
Iuliano also weighed in on contract situations. “With McKennie, it’s the same discussion every year. He’s a solid player every coach relies on. He’s useful, but seeing him play every game makes me think something’s missing. He fills gaps, adapts, and does what’s needed. Personally, I’d renew him.”
“Vlahovic? Yes, I’d keep him too. I like that he’s improved his overall play. The new deal isn’t done yet, and many top clubs want him — we’ll see how it ends. Kostic? I like his attitude, but Juventus probably need something different in that role.”
“Perin deserves to play — Openda ahead of David for now”
On potential departures, Iuliano commented on goalkeeper Mattia Perin. “It would be a shame if he left because he’s an excellent keeper and a very positive influence in the dressing room. But I don’t think keeping him would become an issue. His teammates would be happy if he found a club where he could play regularly.”
To close, Iuliano compared strikers Loïs Openda and Jonathan David. “Openda is doing well — his link-up play and depth runs have been excellent, and he’s started scoring. Right now, I’d choose him, though it’s not a knock on David, who’s still regaining form. I like David’s attitude — he’s always positive, never complains, even when he doesn’t get good service. The group looks united overall. We’ve always known Spalletti is an excellent coach — the job wasn’t easy, but little by little we’re seeing progress.”
