Luciano Spalletti was reflective and candid in his post-match press conference after Juventus’ 3–0 defeat to Atalanta in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals — a result that sees the Bianconeri bow out of the competition despite competing well for large spells of the game.
The Italy manager analysed his team’s performance in detail, acknowledging both positives and shortcomings, while praising Gian Piero Gasperini’s well-drilled Atalanta side.
On the match
“I watched the match, I was even relaxed because I had slept well today,” Spalletti began. “We did what we had to do. There are moments in a game that are a bit fake and only serve the statistics, and others when the match becomes real — those moments are defined by the choices we make. We didn’t make those choices as cleanly or correctly.”
“We played on equal terms with a great Atalanta, a team excellently coached by a manager I congratulate. The team is perfectly built by the club’s ownership, who know exactly how to prepare a side. You have to give them credit — sometimes you win, and other times, like tonight, you learn.”
On the lack of a striker
When asked about the absence of a centre-forward, Spalletti was quick to dismiss the narrative. “The lack of a striker? That’s a game I don’t want to play. I’m happy with the players I have and I’ll continue with them. You’ll see that by the end of the season, those same players people are pointing to will give us the contribution we need.”
On what went wrong
“I didn’t like it when we became disjointed,” he admitted. “When we went looking for something without taking care of our balance. It’s always about maintaining a certain equilibrium. Not protecting and not being organised… there’s always a team balance behind everything, and today we lost that a bit. They were good at winning the ball back. That was the moment when we struggled — we lost ourselves in those rushes forward without maintaining balance.”
On the new signings
“They’re players who have just arrived. Apart from those two, I know my boys inside out and I know what they can give us,” Spalletti explained. “Losing one ball too many can happen — what we lacked was reading those decisive moments properly. If you look closely, it seems a bit distorted: in the situations we had, we didn’t even score one goal and conceded three. We didn’t play that badly, but then you have to chase the game.”
“Some choices probably came down to the intensity of the match — it was a physical, energetic contest between two strong teams, full of duels. We lost a few too many balls, made some poor choices in key moments. There are ‘real moments’, and in those moments you need to make the right decision — that’s where top players show themselves.”
On what needs to improve
“When everything gets frantic and it becomes a pure battle, that’s when you need the composure to make the right decision for the team,” said Spalletti. “Of course, you pay a heavy price for what could’ve been, and for what the competition means. We have to let these matches tell our story — it’s about character, personality, and your level. These are the matches that reveal who you are and what your level is. We’re devastated by disappointment because we had played our game.”
