The Arthur saga has taken another twist. After returning to Gremio on loan last summer — the club where he developed between 2010 and 2018 — Arthur is heading back to Juventus following the failure of negotiations over a permanent deal. The Brazilian midfielder, who remains under contract with the bianconeri until June 2027, must now return to Turin and face an uncertain future at the Continassa.
Gremio’s Official Statement
Gremio confirmed the news in an official club statement: “Gremio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense announces that midfielder Arthur will not renew his contract following the expiry of his loan from Juventus on 30 June 2026. In response to the interest shown in keeping the player, the club submitted a proposal for a new contract. However, no economic agreement was reached between the parties involved, despite both sides’ mutual desire for the player to remain at the Arena. Gremio thanks the player for his services and wishes him every success in the continuation of his sporting career.”
A Winding Road Back to Turin
Arthur was signed by Juventus from Barcelona in June 2020, as part of the deal that sent Miralem Pjanić in the opposite direction. His time at the Continassa has been defined by a series of loan spells — to Liverpool, Fiorentina, Girona, and most recently Gremio — with his last appearance in a Juventus shirt dating all the way back to 11 May 2022: a Coppa Italia final defeat to Inter after extra time. In total, he made 63 appearances for the club, scoring once and providing one assist.
What Happens Next
With the Gremio option exhausted, Arthur’s situation now falls into the hands of new Juventus chief executive Giovanni Carnevali, who may seek to negotiate a resolution through Italian football or explore interest from Turkey, where the former Barcelona man’s profile could appeal to several clubs. A return to Brazil via a different route also cannot be entirely ruled out.
What is clear is that this is a situation no one at Juventus wanted — a player contracted until June 2027, with no obvious sporting role at the club and a wage bill that complicates the financial picture at a moment when every euro counts. For Carnevali, resolving the Arthur file swiftly and cleanly will be one of the many pressing items on an already crowded desk.
