Juventus Make Contact Over Mile Svilar — But Roma’s Position Makes a Deal Unlikely

Juventus’s search for a new first-choice goalkeeper has taken an intriguing new turn, with reports confirming the club have made contact with Roma to explore the possibility of signing Mile Svilar — even as the financial and contractual realities make any swift deal extremely difficult to engineer.

Carnevali Sets Out His Thinking

Speaking as the summer transfer window officially opened, Giovanni Carnevali addressed the goalkeeper situation directly and with characteristic candour. “Closing these negotiations is never easy. We do know where we want to go, that much is certain,” he said. Asked specifically about Dibu Martínez, he was measured rather than committal: “An important player, the Argentine national team’s goalkeeper, of great value and experience. He could be suitable, but we are also evaluating other, different profiles. Vicario could be of interest, but so could other lads. We have no immediate need to close a deal — we have all the time we need to reflect and find players suited to Juventus, who genuinely want to come here.”

It was a deliberately unhurried message — one designed to signal patience rather than panic, even with the club’s goalkeeping position still unresolved.

Svilar Enters the Conversation

Among the names now circulating, journalist Matteo Moretto revealed on Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel that — alongside the well-documented complications around cost and club-to-club negotiations on both the Martínez and Vicario fronts — Mile Svilar of Roma should not be overlooked as a genuine alternative.

According to the report, Juventus have contacted Roma in recent days to sound out the possibility of prising Svilar away from the Stadio Olimpico. The Belgian goalkeeper, who has established himself as one of Serie A’s most reliable performers under Gian Piero Gasperini, is considered an attractive option specifically because his valuation would likely come in below the figures associated with both Martínez and Vicario.

Why a Deal Is Unlikely to Move Quickly

The obstacles, however, are significant. Svilar is contracted to Roma until 30 June 2030 — a deal that reflects the club’s clear intention to build around him long-term. While Roma do need to complete a sale by the close of the financial year for UEFA Financial Fair Play purposes, engineering a swift, off-the-cuff transfer of their first-choice goalkeeper to a direct Serie A rival is, in practical terms, extremely complex.

Nonetheless, the contact has been made, and Svilar remains on Juventus’s shortlist of options for the goalkeeping position going forward. Combined with Carnevali’s relaxed public stance on timing, it points to a club determined to explore every credible avenue — Martínez, Vicario, Svilar and others — before committing to the one that offers the best combination of value, fit, and genuine willingness to join the project Spalletti and Carnevali are building.
