After a week in which his name appeared in every media outlet in Italy and England simultaneously — linked to Juventus, Corriere della Sera reporting he would say yes mid-season, La Repubblica placing him at the centre of Elkann’s potential override scenario, Ravanelli saying it hurts football to see him without a bench, Llorente saying he’ll inevitably return — Antonio Conte has gone to Instagram and said his piece. Clearly, directly, and in terms that close one door and leave another precisely open.
The Full Instagram Statement
“In light of the rumours published in recent days by various media outlets, in Italy and abroad, I feel it is appropriate to intervene to make things clear. My name has been linked to numerous clubs, but at this moment there is no advanced negotiation of any kind. After a wonderful and victorious experience at the helm of Napoli, I will take the time necessary to evaluate how and when to return to coaching. It will be a considered choice — one I will make when I consider the conditions to be right.
I have read about alleged financial demands and about full powers that I am supposed already to have put to the clubs named, as well as about reservations linked to what is called my ‘strong character’. These are reconstructions without foundation, since at the present moment no concrete elements exist on which to base similar assessments.
Should a concrete opportunity arise, it will be the moment to discuss matters with the interested club and evaluate together the conditions of a potential agreement, respecting each other’s requirements and the characteristics that distinguish my work as a manager. Until then, every hypothesis about my demands and my professional future remains speculation and cannot be considered fact.
A greeting, Antonio Conte.”
What the Statement Does — and Does Not — Say
The statement is a masterclass in precise Italian managerial communication. It does several things simultaneously.
It denies categorically: no advanced negotiations with any club — not Juventus, not Manchester United, not anyone else. The reports in Corriere della Sera, La Repubblica, and the English press claiming that talks are ongoing or that he has told clubs he would say yes are not true, or are at minimum premature.
It rejects the “demands” narrative: the recurring framing of Conte as a manager who front-loads impossible conditions — full control of the transfer market, guaranteed investment, specific wage demands — is characterised as “without foundation” because those demands cannot have been made when no conversations have taken place at a concrete level.
It pushes back on the “strong character” trope: the idea that his personality is an obstacle to a hiring is dismissed along with the rest.
But it does not close the door. The conditional construction — “should a concrete opportunity arise” — is the key phrase. Conte is available. He will return when the conditions are right. He will evaluate those conditions in direct conversation with a club. He will not be rushed and he will not be named as the confirmed destination of rumours that are not yet operational.
What It Means for Juventus
The statement does not rule out Juventus. It rules out the specific reporting that claimed talks were already at an advanced stage. The dynamic described by La Repubblica — that Elkann could impose Conte on the board if results deteriorate catastrophically — remains operationally possible. The dynamic described by Tuttosport — that Spalletti is backed by Carnevali and the board, with Elkann in Detroit maintaining confidence in the project — is the current institutional reality. Between those two poles, Lecce on Saturday, Genoa on Tuesday, and Napoli on 1 November will determine how much the gap between them narrows or widens.
