Champions League | Juventus v Galatasary : Match Preview

Desperation meets defiance on Wednesday night in Turin, as Juventus host Galatasaray in the second leg of their Champions League playoff — a tie that already looks near-impossible for the Italian giants to salvage. After being humbled 5–2 in Istanbul last week, Juventus will require a near-miraculous turnaround at the Allianz Stadium to keep their European dreams alive and avoid yet another early exit from continental competition.

Match Preview

A Night to Forget in Istanbul

What began with a flicker of hope ended in humiliation for Juventus in the first leg. After Teun Koopmeiners’ quick-fire brace briefly turned the match around following Galatasaray’s early breakthrough, Luciano Spalletti’s side capitulated in dramatic fashion. The second half saw chaos unfold — substitute Juan Cabal’s red card symbolised a total collapse as Noa Lang, on loan from Napoli, netted twice to complete a resounding 5–2 victory for the Turkish champions.

That defeat was more than just a bad night at the office. It was only the second time in Juventus’ long European history that they had shipped five or more goals in a UEFA competition — the previous occasion dating all the way back to 1959. The historical odds are now heavily stacked against them: of 49 teams that have lost the first leg of a Champions League tie by at least three goals, only four have ever managed to progress.

Juventus Facing a Crisis of Identity

For all their rich European pedigree, Juventus currently look like a team adrift. The loss in Istanbul followed a demoralising Derby d’Italia defeat to Inter Milan and a shock collapse against newly promoted Como. Their once-vaunted home record in Serie A was also snapped this past weekend, as they slumped to a lifeless 2–0 defeat against a resurgent contender in Turin.

With just 46 points on the board — their lowest tally at this stage since 2011 — the Bianconeri are four points adrift of the top four and face mounting pressure to reignite their domestic campaign. Sunday’s looming clash with Roma may prove decisive for their season, but first, Spalletti’s men must try to restore some pride against Galatasaray — a club Juventus haven’t beaten in over two decades.

Galatasaray Riding High — Mostly

For Galatasaray, the first leg wasn’t just a statement win — it was a landmark. The 5–2 triumph marked their 200th European Cup appearance and matched their biggest-ever margin of victory in the Champions League. Historically dominant at home, the Turkish champions have now gone unbeaten in six of their seven meetings with Juventus and look poised to reach the round of 16 for the first time since 2014.

Okan Buruk’s side entered the weekend flying high domestically, leading the Super Lig and hunting a fourth straight league title. Yet their jubilant week turned sour at Konyaspor, where they unexpectedly fell 2–0 against a side without a win in twelve games. That shock result highlighted a familiar vulnerability: their patchy away record in Europe. Galatasaray have lost more than two-thirds of their Champions League matches on the road, and in their last 13 away fixtures in the competition, they have just one victory.

Juventus could receive a defensive boost with the return of Bremer, who limped off in Istanbul and missed the recent Serie A defeat to Como. Pierre Kalulu is also back from suspension, but Spalletti faces headaches at full-back: Emil Holm is sidelined, while Juan Cabal and Andrea Cambiaso are both suspended.

Up front, Jonathan David remains a doubt after featuring only briefly at the weekend, though he could partner promising youngster Kenan Yildiz if declared fit. Dusan Vlahovic and Arkadiusz Milik remain long-term absentees, leaving Juve short of firepower in attack.

For the visitors, Victor Osimhen is expected to return to the starting lineup after being rested against Konyaspor. The Nigerian striker is chasing a Champions League scoring record and will again lead a formidable attack featuring the likes of Noa Lang and Barış Alper Yılmaz. Mauro Icardi, formerly of Inter, could start on the bench this time. Midfielder Mario Lemina returns from suspension to face his old club, while playmaker Gabriel Sara — instrumental in the first leg — is again set to pull the strings.

Probable Starting XI’s

Juventus v Galatasaray

Juventus (3-4-2-1): Di Gregorio; Gatti, Bremer, Kelly; McKennie, Locatelli, Thuram, Kostić; Conceição, Boga; David

Galatasaray (4-2-3-1): Çakır; Sallai, Bardakcı, Sánchez, Jakobs; Torreira, Sara; Yılmaz, Akgün, Lang; Osimhen

Prediction

To have any hope, Juventus will need to start at full throttle and maintain a level of intensity they’ve rarely shown this season. Early goals are essential if they are to make the Turkish visitors sweat. Yet with their defensive frailties — 15 goals conceded in their last five outings — it is difficult to see them keeping a clean sheet against such an explosive Galatasaray front line.

Prediction: Juventus 3-1 Galatasaray
