Chiellini and Comolli to Sky: “Embarrassing and Unacceptable — Today We Can’t Even Talk About Football”

Juventus directors Giorgio Chiellini and Damien Comolli expressed their outrage after the dramatic 3–2 defeat to Inter Milan at San Siro — a match overshadowed by the controversial sending-off of Pierre Kalulu late in the first half. The French defender’s expulsion, widely criticized as a non-existent foul, forced Juventus to play the entire second half with ten men, significantly influencing the outcome.

Speaking to Sky Sport, both Chiellini and Comolli delivered a strong joint message on behalf of the club, condemning what they described as a “systemic failure” in Italian refereeing.

Chiellini opened his comments by stating, “It’s impossible to talk about football after what happened today. Something unacceptable took place — yet another episode since the start of the season that involves us. Decisions like this destroy the game. It’s not right that a match of this magnitude is decided with such superficiality.”

He went on to question the current VAR structure and refereeing standards in Serie A. “Maybe even VAR will have to change after this. We’ve been saying for months that there isn’t an adequate structure in place. Every week a different club finds itself protesting. It’s not sustainable,” Chiellini continued. “You can’t decide the Derby d’Italia like this. There’s a group that clearly isn’t functioning. The person responsible needs to take accountability and fix what’s broken instead of staying silent. And tonight, for a match like this, that person wasn’t even at the stadium.”

The Juventus executive also called for deeper reform. “The protocol must change — tonight proved that. There are ways to avoid these rushed, careless decisions. Coaches like De Rossi, Gasperini, and Conte have all said the same thing. Something in the system isn’t working, and everyone can see it,” he concluded.

Comolli, visibly frustrated, echoed Chiellini’s sentiments. “What happened today is embarrassing. The whole world saw it — a collection of mistakes that have been happening throughout the season,” he said. “It’s incredibly hard to accept such injustices. We congratulated our players for their effort, even though there’s frustration among them and the coach. But tonight, talking about football simply doesn’t make sense.”
