Tonali

Gazzetta: Juventus and the Dream Called Tonali – Could David Be the Key?

Juventus’ biggest transfer dream has a very familiar name: Sandro Tonali. It’s a complicated and ambitious target — but not an impossible one. In football, much depends on the will of the player, and when that aligns with opportunity, even the most unlikely deals can take shape.

The Italian midfielder is settled at Newcastle United, yet the prospect of returning to Serie A, especially to a top club, has its undeniable charm. At this point, Juventus seems the only club capable of offering him that possibility.

The Newcastle Stance and Juventus’ Strategy

La Gazzetta dello Sport report that Newcastle are reluctant to part ways with Tonali unless the player himself explicitly requests it and the offer matches their valuation. Juventus cannot afford a major outlay in January, but Tonali’s personal willingness could help bridge the gap.

At Continassa, the working idea would be a loan deal with a purchase option linked to qualification for next season’s Champions League. However, before making space for such a high-profile addition, Juventus sporting director Comolli — working alongside the newly appointed director of football — would first need to make room in the squad, both technically and economically. Some departures would be inevitable.

The Financial Puzzle and the David Factor

Tonali currently earns around €7 million per season plus €2 million in bonuses — slightly beyond Juventus’ revised salary ceiling, set at €6 million following the arrival of Jonathan David. The Canadian striker’s slow adaptation could prompt the club to reflect on his future, particularly if Newcastle were open to including him in a potential negotiation.

Should that not be possible, Juventus would likely need to finance the deal through sales. Academy graduate Fabio Miretti and young winger Adzic could generate the necessary funds, while other last-minute transfer opportunities may also emerge before the window closes.

Tonali, a Target Everyone Agrees On

At Juventus, Tonali’s name unites everyone — from Luciano Spalletti to the club’s directors. The Italy international represents the ideal profile to take the squad up a level. His arrival would bring experience and leadership, enhancing the Italian core within the team.

Spalletti envisions Tonali’s inclusion as part of a balanced midfield alongside Manuel Locatelli or Khéphren Thuram. Meanwhile, Teun Koopmeiners would continue in his defensive hybrid role, where he has been thriving, and Weston McKennie’s versatility further supports the tactical structure the coach is building.

For Juventus, signing Tonali would represent more than just a statement move — it would be a step towards the identity and ambition the club is eager to restore.
