Giaccherini: “Napoli Are Not Favourites — Spalletti’s Juventus Can Dominate. I See Myself in Cambiaso”

Start

Emanuele Giaccherini, the former Napoli and Juventus player now working as a television pundit, has shared his thoughts ahead of the highly anticipated clash between Napoli and Juventus at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the former Italy international reflected on his memories with both clubs and previewed Sunday night’s match.

“My Two Years at Juventus Shaped Me”

“In two years I lived among champions, I won a lot and grew personally,” Giaccherini recalled. “I was in the dressing room with players like Pirlo, Del Piero and Buffon. You learn so much from them — about mentality and handling pressure.

“When I arrived, the fans were sceptical; when I left, they were sad. I proved that I was worthy of that shirt, and that’s my best memory.”

“In Naples, I Couldn’t Leave My Mark”

“At Napoli, unfortunately, I didn’t leave my mark. I was 31 and had just come off Euro 2016. It felt great to wear the shirt of a big club again and play in the Champions League, like I had with Juve.

“I didn’t have many chances to make an impact, but I was very happy there. The people live for football, and they wait all year long for the match against Juventus.”

“Returning to Turin Was Incredible”

“Entering the Stadium as a former player was wonderful,” he said. “I received a warm embrace from the Juventus fans — a standing ovation. People don’t forget, and for me it was an honour to be welcomed like that.”

“Conte Against Juventus? A Beautiful Storyline”

“It’s a great matchup,” Giaccherini said with a smile. “Conte is a professional — he always supports the team he’s managing. His heart is black and white, and in Turin he made history as both a player and coach.

“But it’s only natural that now he wants to beat them. He’s evolved as a manager — transformed the team and changed tactics several times.”

“Napoli Are Not Favourites — But Spalletti’s Juve Can Dominate”

“Lobotka’s injury weighs heavily — he’s the brain of the team. Elmas and McTominay will play, but they’ll need to stay focused,” Giaccherini analysed. “Juventus are in a good mental place. They’re coming off three consecutive wins, and you can see Spalletti’s influence everywhere. I don’t consider Napoli favourites.”

He continued: “Juventus can dominate the match. I expect personality and the desire to take control of the game. Spalletti has placed many players in their ideal positions — McKennie, Koopmeiners, Kostic has been revitalised, and Yildiz has the freedom to express his talent.

“With Vlahovic out, David has the perfect chance to rediscover himself — he’s the kind of player capable of scoring 100 career goals.”

“I See Myself in Cambiaso”

“In Napoli, Noa Lang reminds me of the Giaccherini of my prime — a winger before Conte turned me into a midfielder,” he said. “At Juventus, I see myself in Cambiaso: he’s adaptable and performs well wherever he’s asked to play.”
