“I Never Argued with Giuntoli”: Thiago Motta Breaks Silence on Juventus Exit and Transfer Decisions

Motta

Thiago Motta has addressed his sudden dismissal as Juventus manager in a candid interview with Corriere della Sera, refuting rumours of tensions with director Cristiano Giuntoli and defending key transfer decisions during his tenure. The former coach, replaced by Igor Tudor after a turbulent season, insisted his relationship with the club’s leadership remained professional until the end.

Debunking the “Ashamed” Allegation

Motta categorically denied reports that Giuntoli told him, “I’m ashamed I chose you!” during their final meetings. “It’s not true. I never had the conversation that’s been written about, never. I never argued with the director, never. We spoke about how to improve the team, as always, with clarity and honesty—even with differing opinions, as is normal. These lies are exactly what I refuse to let stand,” he stated.

The 42-year-old emphasized alignment with Giuntoli on squad-building strategies, acknowledging financial constraints while prioritizing Juventus’ long-term vision. “I wasn’t involved in the economic valuations of individual players, but we always agreed on choices to strengthen the team,” he explained.

Transfer Regrets and Justifications

When asked about controversial departures, Motta stood by the sales of Moise Kean and Nicolò Fagioli to Fiorentina, calling them “economic decisions, not just technical ones.” However, he admitted one misstep: “A player we were wrong not to keep was Nicolussi Caviglia, who’s showing great quality at Venezia.”

He also highlighted the impact of injuries, particularly Gleison Bremer’s absence: “When Bremer was on the field, we kept six clean sheets. At the start of the season, when his sale was discussed, I asked the club to keep him. Without him, everything became much harder.”

Parting Words to Juventus Fans

Reflecting on his abrupt departure, Motta expressed sadness but gratitude: “I was upset because I imagined this job going differently. But it was a great professional and human experience.” Addressing supporters directly, he added: “I thank them for everything we experienced together. Juventus needs to win again—this hasn’t happened in too many years. This team needed fewer injuries and more time, but I believe what we’ve sown will remain.”

Looking Ahead

Currently spending time with his family in Portugal, Motta signalled readiness for a new challenge: “I’m ready to embrace another project and continue my work. In this job, victories belong to everyone; defeats belong to the coach. I’ll keep making decisions I believe are right without self-interest.”

His final message underscored resilience: “If things go well, I’ll be happy for everyone. If they go wrong, I’ll take responsibility—as I always have.”
