Juventus’ 2026 Midfield Plan: Tonali at the Top of the List

Juventus have mapped out a clear priority for 2026: strengthening the heart of their midfield with a genuine top-level player. The club’s hierarchy want a long-term reference point in the centre of the pitch, someone capable of elevating the overall quality of the team and shifting the balance in key matches. With this objective in mind, the transfer machine is already in motion, and one name stands out above all the others on the shortlist: Sandro Tonali of Newcastle United.

Calciomercato report that the Italian midfielder, previously linked several times with the Bianconeri, is seen as the ideal profile to lead the next evolution of Juventus’ midfield. His potential return to Serie A is viewed as a strategic move, both in footballing and symbolic terms. While leaving the Premier League is far from straightforward, the club consider Tonali the marquee signing around which to build the core of their future side.

Contacts Between Juventus and Tonali

Initial contacts have already taken place to explore the feasibility of a deal. The club have sounded out the player’s entourage to understand the conditions, margins and possible costs of an operation that, given Newcastle’s financial strength and the general difficulty of dealing with English clubs, is anything but simple. At this stage, the groundwork has been limited to informal enquiries, without yet moving into advanced negotiations or concrete offers.

Time, however, is the key factor in this plan. Juventus know that bringing Tonali back to Italy will require patience and careful preparation. A move in the January window appears highly unlikely due to the tight timing and the complexity of the deal. Instead, the Bianconeri are aiming for the summer, when there will be more room to manoeuvre and construct an operation that satisfies all parties involved.

Short-Term Needs and Interim Midfield Reinforcement

While Tonali is regarded as the big target for the next season, Juventus still have immediate issues to address in midfield. The need for a new addition in the middle of the park is real and pressing, and the club cannot afford to wait until the summer without strengthening the squad. For this reason, the directors are working on a short-term solution that does not compromise the long-term plan centred on Tonali.

The current strategy is to look for a player suited to Spalletti’s style of play who would be available on a six-month deal. The preferred formula is a loan, possibly with an option to buy but without mandatory clauses that would force a permanent transfer. This would allow Juventus to cover their immediate needs, add depth and quality in midfield for the second half of the season, and still retain full flexibility to focus decisively on Tonali once the summer window opens.

Juventus’ Midfield Strategy Going Forward

Several names have already been studied and some preliminary approaches have been made as the club evaluate the options available on the market. The objective is to find the right balance between short-term practicality and long-term vision, ensuring that any arrival in January does not block or complicate the pursuit of Tonali.

In essence, Juventus are working on two parallel tracks: a temporary reinforcement to support the current campaign and a flagship signing in Sandro Tonali to anchor the midfield for years to come. The direction is clear, the planning has begun, and the coming months will reveal whether this carefully constructed strategy can deliver the midfield structure the club has been seeking.
