Juventus Reignite Interest in Xhaka as January Opportunity Arises

Start

Juventus are once again exploring the possibility of bringing Granit Xhaka to Turin, with Tuttosport (via Calciomercato) reporting that the Swiss midfielder has re-emerged as a target ahead of the January transfer window.

The Bianconeri’s management are focused on securing a deep-lying playmaker for Luciano Spalletti, who is preparing to switch to a 4-3-3 system in the second half of the season. Primary target Morten Hjulmand appears increasingly difficult to prise away from Sporting Lisbon, pushing the club to consider alternative profiles with similar qualities and experience.

Chance to Revive Xhaka Talks

Among those options is Xhaka, who Juventus had already monitored last summer before his move from Bayer Leverkusen to Sunderland. The Premier League club signed the 32-year-old on a three-year deal until June 2028, paying around €15 million for the Swiss international.

Since arriving in England, Xhaka has maintained his reputation as a leader on and off the pitch. Under French coach Régis Le Bris, he has been ever-present, racking up 990 minutes in 11 Premier League matches, contributing one goal and three assists. His consistency has played a central role in Sunderland’s impressive start to the campaign, sitting fourth in the table with 19 points—just one behind Chelsea, three behind Manchester City, and seven adrift of Xhaka’s former club Arsenal.

The midfielder also continues to shine on the international stage, recently scoring a penalty in Switzerland’s 4–1 win over Sweden before their decisive trip to Kosovo in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

A Door Still Open

According to the Turin-based daily, Xhaka’s representatives are open to hearing proposals from major Champions League sides. Sunderland, for their part, are not ruling out a departure less than six months after his arrival, though any deal would likely require more than the €15 million paid to Leverkusen during the summer.

For Juventus, Xhaka’s leadership, tactical intelligence, and experience in the Premier League could make him an ideal addition to Spalletti’s evolving project. Should the Swiss midfielder push for the move, the English club might consider negotiating terms beneficial to both sides—potentially paving the way for one of January’s most intriguing transfer stories.
