Marchisio on Spalletti’s Decision: “I Would Never Take Yildiz Off”

Start

Luciano Spalletti’s decision to substitute Kenan Yildiz in the closing stages of Napoli vs Juventus is likely to spark debate for days to come. With the match still locked at 1-1, the Juventus coach replaced the Turkish forward with Lois Openda a quarter of an hour from time — a change that proved costly, as the Bianconeri conceded the decisive 2-1 goal just minutes later.

Speaking in the DAZN studio after the final whistle, former Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio didn’t hide his disappointment at the move. “A player like him, I would never take off,” said Marchisio, underlining his admiration for Yildiz’s technical quality and growing influence within the team.

The young number 10 had once again been one of Juve’s liveliest performers, scoring in the first half and constantly asking questions of the Napoli defence. His withdrawal, therefore, surprised many and appeared to shift the momentum in favour of the hosts.

Spalletti, however, offered a firm defence of his choice during the post-match press conference. “Seven days ago, you asked me if he needed some rest,” said the Juventus head coach. “Today, he was replaced a quarter of an hour from the end by Openda, who cost 45 million. Can’t we do that? It’s the game of synonyms and opposites. He wasn’t unwell — but he has to do more, like the whole team. He scored, yes, but in certain moments he needs to give more.”

The exchange captured the tension between faith in youthful talent and the demand for consistency in a side still searching for balance. For Spalletti, the message was clear: talent alone is not enough. For Marchisio, though, removing a player bursting with creativity may have cost Juventus their chance to take something from Naples.
