In the ever-shifting landscape of the January transfer market, Federico Gatti’s name continues to feature prominently. Massimiliano Allegri, who identified Dusan Vlahovic as his ideal striker last summer, has never hidden his admiration for another former pupil: Gatti, one of the players who developed most significantly under his management.
Milan Renew Interest in Gatti
Tuttosport (as quoted by Calciomercato) report that the Juventus defender has long been on Milan’s radar, with the Rossoneri having tested the waters with the Bianconeri hierarchy in recent months. According to Tuttosport, an initial approach was made involving a potential swap deal that included Koni De Winter, but the negotiations never gained momentum. The two clubs remained far apart in their valuations, and the operation stalled before reaching any serious stage.
However, there’s a sense that the matter is far from closed. At Milanello, there’s belief that a fresh attempt could be made, perhaps not immediately but towards the end of January. Much will depend on the tactical context and the choices of Luciano Spalletti, particularly if the manager settles on the 4-2-3-1 formation, a system that currently appears to work against Gatti in the pecking order.
Gatti’s Situation at Juventus
The defender has been sidelined since mid-November with a knee injury, with his return expected in the next couple of weeks. The layoff has inevitably slowed his progress and affected rotation plans. At present, Bremer and Kelly are the first-choice pairing in central defence, with ready-made alternatives in Cabal, Kalulu, who can slot into the centre-back role comfortably, and Rugani, currently unavailable through injury. It’s also worth noting that if Juventus revert to a back three, Koopmeiners could provide another option.
In this scenario, Gatti risks slipping down the pecking order, at least in the short term. This is where Milan see an opening: if the defender doesn’t immediately return to being a tactical priority, the Rossoneri could launch another assault, buoyed by Allegri’s continued faith and a profile that, both in terms of characteristics and mentality, appears well-suited to the club’s needs.
