Moggi: “Motta Would Have Led Juventus to Ruin”

Moggi

Former Juventus executive Luciano Moggi has launched a scathing critique of the club’s recent decisions, blaming ex-manager Thiago Motta for pushing the team toward crisis while defending sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli.

Motta’s Missteps

Moggi argued that Motta’s tenure was marked by baffling choices: “Thiago Motta did the opposite of what a coach should do. He distributed captain’s armbands, altered roles, played Koopmeiners while he was sick… there are a thousand examples. He was allowed to operate this way, and he did the job as he saw fit. Then they realized he would’ve dragged Juventus into the abyss in the standings—but too late.”

The 87-year-old singled out the Champions League elimination to PSV Eindhoven as the breaking point: “If they’d acted after PSV… the players’ views didn’t align with the coach, and that’s when the change should’ve happened.”

Praise for Tudor

Moggi endorsed the appointment of Igor Tudor, who took over in March: “They did well to hire him, but they should’ve called him earlier. Tudor has Juventus in his heart. He came where others refused, signed a two-month contract, and is fully committed to lifting the club. He’s attached to these colors and will do everything possible.”

Leadership Accountability

While Moggi criticized the board’s delayed response, he shifted blame away from Giuntoli: “If Giuntoli worked in agreement with Motta, he’s also responsible. But if Motta acted on his own, as it seems to me, there’s only one person to blame—and he should’ve been removed sooner.”

The comments reflect growing frustration over Juventus’ underwhelming season, which saw early exits from the Champions League and Coppa Italia, alongside a Serie A campaign plagued by inconsistent form. Moggi’s remarks underscore internal tensions as the club fights to salvage a top-four finish.
