Ahead of the big showdown at the Allianz Stadium between Juventus and Roma, former midfielder Miralem Pjanić — who wore both shirts during his Serie A career — spoke to Rete Sport about his memories, emotions, and reflections on his time with the two clubs.
On his time at Roma
“When I left, it wasn’t easy,” Pjanić admitted. “I loved and still love Roma. Of course, in a football career, you have to make choices that you think are the right ones. But I was very attached to everyone — the fans, the team, and the people who worked at the club. Leaving Roma was difficult.”
Pjanić joined Roma in 2011 from Lyon, becoming one of the cornerstones of the club’s midfield for five seasons. Despite his influence and the team’s constant improvement, trophies remained elusive for the Giallorossi during his tenure.
On why Roma couldn’t win
“Why couldn’t Roma win in those years?” he reflected. “In the first season, it was all complicated — a new American project, Luis Enrique and Sabatini, who brought me in. In the following years, the team kept improving. Walter (Sabatini) found incredible players every season — just look at the careers they went on to have.
“Everyone asks why we couldn’t win. Unfortunately, Juventus were unbeatable. They had an extraordinary group of players and, even more importantly, extraordinary men who never gave up a single point. It’s a shame because that Roma side really deserved to win some titles.”
Pjanić’s record with both clubs
Pjanić represented Roma from 2011 to 2016, racking up 185 appearances and 30 goals without claiming any silverware. He then joined Juventus in 2016, where he spent four successful seasons, making 178 appearances and scoring 22 goals.
With the Bianconeri, he collected an impressive haul: four Serie A titles, two Coppa Italia trophies, and one Italian Super Cup.
