Fabrizio Ravanelli has launched a scathing attack on the current use of VAR in Italian football, claiming that the technology has distorted the game and stripped it of its authenticity. The former Juventus and Lazio striker expressed his frustration during an appearance on Radio Anch’io Sport (as quoted by Tuttosport), openly criticising both refereeing standards and the attitudes of modern players.
“It’s an unrecognisable kind of football. We’ve reached the point of decline, and only here in Italy do we use VAR in this way,” Ravanelli said. “In other leagues, VAR is applied differently. The way we use it allows any player on the pitch to cheat. The refereeing class today leaves a lot to be desired. There’s a constant effort to trick the referee — whereas once there was far more respect. We used to have officials like Casarin, Agnolin, and Di Bello — referees with strong personalities — and that had a real impact on the game.”
“Juve Showed Progress, but Still Struggle in Front of Goal”
Turning to Juventus’ 2–2 draw against Lazio, Ravanelli, a former player for both clubs, shared mixed feelings about his old team’s performance.
“It was a great game,” he said. “Juventus once again showed their problems in front of goal. There’s an incredible difficulty in finishing — and then at the first shot on goal, they conceded. Lazio, on the other hand, played with heart and character.”
Despite the issues in attack, Ravanelli praised certain aspects of the Bianconeri’s development.
“There’s been a big improvement in the style of play and in the sense of belonging. Juventus have to keep going like this, even though they still need three or four players to close the gap with teams like Inter.”
When asked whether Dusan Vlahović’s return could be the solution up front, Ravanelli was cautiously optimistic.
“He could give them a big hand in this league. But looking ahead, Juventus will need a top-level striker. I’m in love with Osimhen — I hope they can get him. He could be the finisher that helps Juventus return to being competitive at international level.”
“Don’t Compare Today’s Juve with the Legends of the Past”
Ravanelli also commented on Juventus’ off-field situation, urging balance and patience amid comparisons to past leadership figures.
“If we start bringing up names like Boniperti, Moggi, Giraudo, Bettega, or Andrea Agnelli, we’re talking about the Olympus — the people who made Juventus history. But I have faith in Comolli and Chiellini,” he explained. “I met Comolli in Marseille — he’s competent, humble, and professional. He’s got some experience, but he just needs time. Chiellini knows the Juventus environment inside out.”
The former striker admitted that some mistakes have been made but remains positive about the club’s direction.
“Of course, some signings haven’t worked out, but I’m convinced these are people who will bring real benefits to Juventus.”
