Serie A | Juventus v Roma: Match Preview

Start

Two of Italian football’s traditional heavyweights meet at the Allianz Stadium on Saturday evening, as Juventus host Roma in a crucial Serie A encounter with major top-four implications. While some of their rivals are busy contesting the Supercoppa Italiana in Saudi Arabia, both sides have the perfect opportunity to strengthen their grip on Champions League qualification spots.

Juventus finding rhythm under Spalletti

After a turbulent start to the season, Juventus appear to be rediscovering their rhythm under the guidance of Luciano Spalletti, who is gradually imposing his tactical identity on the Bianconeri. A morale-boosting run of results — highlighted by a hard-fought win at Bologna last weekend — has pushed Juve to within touching distance of the Champions League places.

That victory followed a pair of European successes against Pafos, which reignited hopes of progression in the Champions League. At Bologna, second-half substitute Juan Cabal proved the unlikely hero, nodding home the decisive goal just minutes after being introduced from the bench.

Those recent results have transformed the atmosphere in Turin. Two wins from their last three Serie A matches — as many as they managed in their previous nine — underline Juventus’s growing stability. Back at home, where they have not been beaten in the league since last spring, Spalletti will aim to extend Juve’s unbeaten home run to 12 matches.

Saturday’s meeting also carries a personal flavour for Spalletti. Having once sat on the Roma bench, he knows better than most how emotionally charged this fixture can be. His current side’s record at home against the Giallorossi will certainly give him confidence — the Bianconeri have won 11 of their last 14 Serie A meetings in Turin, keeping an impressive 10 clean sheets in that time.

Roma aiming to end their Turin drought

For Roma, the trip north to Turin remains one of the toughest away challenges in Italian football. The capital club have not beaten Juventus in the league since 2019 and have registered only one victory in their last 10 Serie A encounters against the Bianconeri. Nonetheless, there are reasons for optimism as Gian Piero Gasperini’s men look to make a statement of intent in the top-four race.

Earlier this week, Roma edged past Como 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico thanks to Brazilian wing-back Wesley, who netted his third goal of the campaign. That result ended a difficult spell in which the Giallorossi had lost twice in succession without scoring, hampered by a shortage of fit strikers. Despite those setbacks, Roma remain just a few points adrift of the summit and could leapfrog into second place with a rare win in Turin.

Defensive resilience has been the cornerstone of Roma’s campaign so far. With only eight goals conceded, they boast Serie A’s tightest back line, and away from home their form has been exceptional — 12 wins from their last 17 league matches on the road paints the picture of a team well-drilled and mentally resilient.

Team News

Juventus continue to battle defensive absences. Federico Gatti misses out, while centre-backs Daniele Rugani and Bremer have only just returned from injury. The latter could be risked from the start, with Spalletti forced to reshuffle at the back due to Teun Koopmeiners being suspended after filling in as a makeshift defender in recent weeks.

In attack, Kenan Yildiz has been one of the season’s revelations. The young Turkish playmaker, who assisted Cabal’s winner last weekend, will again be asked to provide creative spark behind the striker. With Dusan Vlahovic still sidelined, either Lois Openda or Jonathan David will lead the line. David, who recently found the net in Europe, is desperate to end his domestic goal drought, which has stretched to 13 league appearances.

Roma, meanwhile, face familiar concerns in the attacking third. Evan Ferguson and Paulo Dybala have both struggled to find form, with Dybala enduring his leanest start to a Serie A season since arriving in Italy. However, Matías Soulé, another Argentine with Juve history, has been a bright spot. His creativity and willingness to take risks could prove decisive; he ranks among the league’s top players for both shots and chances created this season.

Artem Dovbyk may return from injury and offer Gasperini an option off the bench, but Roma will be without Evan Ndicka and Neil El Aynaoui, who are set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations, further testing their squad depth.

Probable Starting XI’s

Juventus v Roma

Juventus (3-4-2-1): Di Gregorio; Kalulu, Kelly, Bremer; McKennie, Locatelli, Thuram, Cambiaso; Conceição, Yildiz; David.

Roma (3-4-2-1): Svilar; Celik, Mancini, Hermoso; Wesley, Kone, Cristante, Rensch; Soule, Pellegrini; Ferguson.

Prediction

This promises to be a tightly contested affair between two disciplined and defensively reliable teams. Neither side has been prolific this season, and recent meetings suggest that clear chances may be few and far between. Juventus, however, hold the edge in both confidence and home advantage. Their structure under Spalletti looks increasingly solid, while Roma’s struggles in front of goal could once again prove costly.

Prediction: Juventus 1–0 Roma
