Lazio v Juventus

Serie A | Lazio v Juventus: Match Preview

Two underperforming Serie A heavyweights meet under the floodlights of the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday night, as Lazio host Juventus in what feels like a defining early-season clash. Both sides are battling to rediscover their rhythm after stuttering starts to their campaigns, and neither can afford further setbacks.

The State of Play

Juventus arrive in Rome mired in a worrying slump, one that has raised uncomfortable questions about their direction under Igor Tudor. The Bianconeri’s midweek trip to Madrid ended in another disappointment, as Real Madrid edged them out in the Champions League despite a bold first-half display.

It marked their sixth straight game without victory across all competitions — five draws followed by back-to-back defeats — leaving Juve with only two points from their opening three group fixtures. The loss continued an alarming trend of attacking inefficiency, with Dusan Vlahovic and Lois Openda spurning key chances at the Bernabéu before Jude Bellingham’s late goal sealed their fate.

That came on the back of a flat 2-0 defeat at Como, a result that snapped an 11-match unbeaten domestic run and underlined the team’s creative fragility. Juve have now gone over 300 minutes without finding the net — Francisco Conceição’s goal against Villarreal remains their last in open play.

Despite their current malaise, history offers a glimmer of hope. Juventus have failed to score just once in their last 29 visits to Lazio — a run that stretches back over two decades. Tudor will hope that record holds firm as his team seek to halt the bleeding.

Sarri vs Tudor: Familiar Faces, Familiar Frustrations

Sunday’s fixture also brings an intriguing managerial subplot. Igor Tudor returns to the capital to face not only one of his former clubs but also his predecessor there. Maurizio Sarri, now back in charge of Lazio, briefly guided Juventus to a Scudetto in 2020 — their ninth in succession — before his departure set in motion a period of turbulence that the Turin club still hasn’t fully escaped.

Lazio themselves have experienced turbulence of a different kind. After losing three of their opening four matches, Sarri’s side began to show flickers of recovery. A 3-0 win over Genoa restored some belief, followed by a gritty point against Torino and a goalless draw in Bergamo before the international break.

Still, consistency continues to elude them. The Biancocelesti have turned the Olimpico into a stage for stalemates rather than celebrations, collecting 10 home draws since the start of last season and managing only two wins in their last 15 Serie A games on home soil. Their defensive fragility remains a concern, with one clean sheet in that entire stretch.

As a result, both teams find themselves already playing catch-up in the race for European qualification — a surprising reality for two clubs accustomed to loftier ambitions.

Team News

Tudor could revert to a more familiar setup after shuffling his pack in midweek. Manuel Locatelli, left on the bench against Real Madrid, is expected to reclaim his place in midfield; Weston McKennie’s is expected to take the place of Khephren Thuram. The absence of Bremer, still sidelined through injury, leaves Juve short in defence, with Juan Cabal also out. However, the remainder of the squad appears fully fit.

Up front, the Croatian coach is still searching for the right formula. Jonathan David, Lois Openda, and Dusan Vlahovic are competing for a starting berth. Vlahovic’s record against Lazio — seven goals, including two memorable braces — could tilt the decision in his favour, with David partnering him in a 3-5-2 formation.

For Maurizio Sarri, the situation is far more complicated. His team is stretched thin by injuries and the lingering effects of a transfer embargo that limited reinforcement options. Star striker Valentin Castellanos remains unavailable, joined on the sidelines by Nuno Tavares, Nicolò Rovella, Samuel Gigot, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and Luca Pellegrini.

To make matters worse, Matteo Cancellieri, who had recently hit form with a double against Torino, is now out with a thigh problem — depriving Lazio of one of their few genuine threats from wide areas.

Probable Starting XI’s

Lazio v Juventus

Lazio (4-3-3): Provedel; Hysaj, Gila, Romagnoli, Marusic; Guendouzi, Cataldi, Basic; Isaksen, Dia, Zaccagni

Juventus (3-5-2): Di Gregorio; Kalulu, Gatti, Kelly; Conceicao, McKennie, Locatelli, Koopmeiners, Cambiaso; David, Vlahovic

Prediction

On paper, this matchup looks destined for another draw — the outcome most typical of both sides over the past few months. Lazio’s inability to finish matches at home meets Juventus’s toothless attack, promising a tight and cagey affair.

Yet, with the hosts short of attacking options and confidence, Juventus have the clearer path to redemption. Tudor’s men must seize the opportunity to earn their first win in weeks and restore some calm after a turbulent stretch.

Prediction: Lazio 1–2 Juventus
