Napoli resurgence under Conte gathers pace

The reigning champions appear to be stirring again under Antonio Conte. After a turbulent start to the campaign marred by injuries and tactical inconsistency, Napoli’s recent turnaround has been striking. A shift in formation and renewed intensity have delivered four straight victories across all competitions, propelling the Azzurri back into the Scudetto conversation.

Their recent run includes key statements — an impressive win over Atalanta, a composed European victory against Qarabag, and a landmark Derby del Sole triumph over Roma sealed by David Neres’ moment of brilliance. Even in the Coppa Italia, where Cagliari forced extra time earlier this week, Napoli’s resilience shone through. Goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić emerged as the hero in a dramatic shootout, both saving and scoring to send the holders into the quarter-finals.

Conte’s men now prepare for their final home fixture of 2025 with history beckoning. The Partenopei have not lost a Serie A match at the Maradona since December last year — a run of 20 unbeaten games (15 wins, 5 draws). Should they avoid defeat on Sunday, it would mark their first entire calendar year without a home league loss since 1987, a milestone with deep emotional resonance in Naples.

The Italian coach himself carries an added layer of intrigue. Once a Juventus icon as both player and manager, Conte now finds himself leading their fiercest challengers. His transformation of Napoli’s mentality has been rapid, and he’ll be eager to extend Napoli’s dominance over Juve — the Neapolitans have claimed victory in each of their last six home meetings with the Bianconeri.

Spalletti returns to Naples with a point to prove

Across the technical area, Luciano Spalletti steps back into the city where he delivered immortality. The man who ended Napoli’s 33-year Scudetto drought in 2023 returns for the first time since his departure — only this time, he wears the black and white of Juventus.

Spalletti’s tenure in Turin is still in its infancy, yet signs of stability are emerging. His Juventus side remain unbeaten after seven matches, with recent back-to-back wins across three competitions fostering optimism. A 2-0 Coppa Italia victory over Udinese in midweek followed a crucial Serie A success against Cagliari and a European triumph over Bodo/Glimt, suggesting the architect of last season’s title triumph has begun to organise the chaos he inherited.

Currently five points off Napoli and outside the top six, Juventus know a statement result in Naples could ignite their title push heading into the new year. Spalletti, a tactical perfectionist, will be desperate to prove that his philosophy can yield results even against his former masterpiece.

Team News

Conte continues to navigate a crippling injury list. Midfield orchestrator Stanislav Lobotka has joined Kevin De Bruyne, Frank Anguissa and Billy Gilmour on the sidelines, while Alex Meret, Romelu Lukaku and Miguel Gutiérrez also remain unavailable. Nonetheless, the return of Scott McTominay and Alessandro Buongiorno brings welcome steel and balance to the lineup.

David Neres, Napoli’s recent creative catalyst, is expected to start after being rested in midweek, supporting Rasmus Højlund in attack. The Brazilian has been directly involved in five goals across his last six Serie A appearances — a vital outlet given the absences in midfield.

For Juventus, Spalletti will again rely on makeshift solutions at the back. Federico Gatti, Bremer and Daniele Rugani are all ruled out, depriving him of his preferred defensive trio. Michele Di Gregorio resumes his role in goal, while the in-form Kenan Yildiz provides inventive spark behind Jonathan David, who is likely to start ahead of Loïs Openda.

With Dušan Vlahović sidelined until 2026, much of the attacking burden rests on Yildiz — though notably, all seven of the young Turkish forward’s goal involvements this season have come in Turin.

Probable Starting XI’s

Prediction

Both teams approach this encounter with momentum, confidence, and a shared appetite for redemption. Conte’s Napoli thrive on intensity and defensive discipline, while Spalletti’s Juventus are beginning to express his trademark fluidity in possession. Yet injuries and away form might tilt the balance.

Napoli’s home record and fighting spirit cannot be ignored — even with a depleted squad, they often find a way under the lights of Fuorigrotta. Juventus, though improving, remain a work in progress.

Prediction: Napoli 1–1 Juventus.
