Spalletti and Locatelli after Cagliari defeat: “We must keep going like this”

Juventus endured a bitter night in Sardinia as they fell to Cagliari at the Unipol Domus. After the final whistle, coach Luciano Spalletti and captain Manuel Locatelli faced the media to analyse a defeat that left frustration as much as reflection.

Spalletti: “We must keep going like this”

Luciano Spalletti opened his post-match remarks by highlighting the team’s approach and what was missing in the final third.

“When you don’t win, there are always many situations you can point to,” said the Juventus coach. “For me, we needed to circulate the ball more along the edge of the area to create shooting chances from distance, rather than relying on crosses. And when you do cross, they have to be precise to be effective. Zhegrova put in three or four at the end, most of them quite long, and we were unlucky with a couple of headers that missed by just a few centimetres. That’s football sometimes. We played our game and managed it well.”

On what decided the match, Spalletti stressed the importance of details.

“We didn’t allow any counter-attacks, which is the main risk in these matches. We always pressed them back, regained possession quickly and kept them pinned in. But sometimes, in the fine details, that little bit of focus and quality in an unprepared situation makes the difference — and that’s what they did. They exploited a single incident with a great goal, although it was a bit fortunate given the way the free-kick was taken and deflected.”

Despite the defeat, Spalletti didn’t question his team’s overall performance.

“There’s nothing else to say — these things happen. I still believe we played the game we had to play. In key moments, when we reached the dangerous zone, we weren’t sharp enough or quick enough to execute what we’d prepared. We lost half a second too many. Football sometimes is about anticipating what’s coming a moment early, having that instinct. I feel colours and see music when we play — you must sense what’s about to happen and act before it does. When you react, it’s already too late. We have to become more cunning.”

The coach was generous in his praise for the hosts.

“I have to congratulate Cagliari. Sardinia is a wonderful land, and they have a team and a president who give everything for their club. They deserve credit, and we move forward.”

He also allowed himself a pointed remark about the number of stoppages.

“There’s one thing that needs fixing — players going down too easily. Tonight they were down 10 or 15 times, always with cramp. It kills the rhythm and the conviction. When they stay down for 30 seconds, they recover completely, and the pressure we had built up disappears.”

Spalletti closed by reinforcing the mentality he expects from Juventus.

“We have to play these matches this way and keep going like this. When you’re in the thick of it, you need intuition, quality, vision, and creativity that go beyond the normal rhythm of the game. You must switch play, see openings differently, or raise the tempo to a level others can’t handle. We did some of that well, but there’s still room for improvement. We’re disappointed because we lost — a draw wouldn’t have been enough either. To fight for top positions, these are the matches you must win.”

On Kenan Yildiz, Spalletti confirmed the young attacker had been under the weather.

“He performed well despite having a sore throat and missing a couple of training sessions. He did what he had to do, was unlucky in a few moments, showed quality, and worked hard off the ball. I expect him to build on this performance.”

Locatelli: “We must react with our heads high”

Captain Manuel Locatelli echoed his manager’s frustration with the lack of cutting edge in front of goal.

“I think we lacked a bit of ruthlessness in the final third. These are matches you have to unlock early — when you don’t, it becomes difficult. We conceded from a slightly unlucky free-kick and that affected the game.”

Despite the defeat, Locatelli called for composure.

“It didn’t feel like a match we deserved to lose, but we can’t let our heads drop. We need to stay positive and keep working. We’re on the right track in terms of attitude and style of play, but there’s still room for improvement. Every match is its own story, even if some feel similar. We started well today, but in the attacking phase we made choices we should have handled better and became a bit frantic. It went their way. We have to analyse this defeat with clarity — the team is there, and we must continue on this path with enthusiasm and desire.”
