UEFA Ranking: The Race for a Fifth Champions League Spot

Start

The battle for an extra Champions League place has begun once again, as the UEFA season gets underway and national leagues measure their strength in Europe. The UEFA Ranking determines which two countries will earn the right to have a fifth representative in next season’s Champions League — and Italy is once again in the mix.

Italy’s Past Success and Present Challenge

Calciomercato report how during the 2023/24 campaign, Serie A clubs produced a remarkable performance that secured Italy an additional spot in Europe’s top competition. Atalanta’s Europa League triumph, Fiorentina’s Conference League final appearance, Roma’s Europa League semi-final, and an all-Italian quarter-final between Milan and Roma all contributed to the strong coefficient. The result was that Bologna, finishing fifth in Serie A, gained access to the Champions League.

That success, however, was not repeated last season. Italian clubs fell short in key European rounds, meaning that the current campaign starts with only four Italian teams in the Champions League: Napoli, Inter, Atalanta, and Juventus. Bologna and Roma compete in the Europa League, while Fiorentina represent Serie A in the Conference League.

How the UEFA Ranking Works

The UEFA Ranking is calculated using results accumulated by clubs from each participating nation over the past five seasons, including the current one. Every win, draw, and progression through rounds earns points. To ensure balance, those points are divided by the number of clubs representing that nation.

For Italy, seven teams are active this season across the three competitions. The system rewards consistency and depth, as strong results from multiple clubs can significantly boost a national coefficient.

The Regulation in Detail

By default, the top five nations in the UEFA Ranking are guaranteed four Champions League places. However, the two highest-ranked nations at the end of the season also receive one additional qualification spot. Last year, England and Spain benefited from this arrangement. England even saw a sixth team in the Champions League following Tottenham’s Europa League victory, while Spain’s success was fuelled by Real Betis’s Conference League triumph over Fiorentina.

The Current UEFA Ranking

Here is the updated UEFA Ranking, which reflects performances so far this season and will evolve with every round of European play:

Nation Coefficient Clubs Remaining
England 9.388 9/9
Germany 8.000 7/7
Portugal 7.800 4/5
Cyprus 7.750 3/4
Italy 7.714 7/7
Spain 7.625 8/8
Poland 7.375 4/4
Denmark 7.125 2/4
France 6.357 7/7
Netherlands 5.916 6/6

The margins are tight, with Italy sitting just behind Portugal and Cyprus. Solid runs from Juventus, Inter, and Atalanta in the Champions League, alongside deep progress by Roma, Bologna, and Fiorentina in the Europa League and Conference League, could once again propel Serie A among the top two. The race for the fifth Champions League spot is well and truly alive — and every European night now matters.
