On the eve of Juventus’ daunting Champions League playoff second leg against Galatasaray, defender Lloyd Kelly joined manager Luciano Spalletti in front of the media to preview the decisive clash in Turin. The English centre-back, calm yet determined, spoke about belief, unity, and the challenge that awaits at the Allianz Stadium.
The Support of the Fans
Kelly began by underlining the importance of Juventus supporters as the Bianconeri aim to overturn a heavy first-leg deficit.
“When we play in front of our fans, it always gives us a lot of belief and confidence in ourselves,” he said. “It’s up to us to go into the game with the right mindset. We know the position we’re in and we can’t forget it — it’s a difficult task, but we have to be ready.”
A United Dressing Room
The former Bournemouth defender stressed that, despite the club’s struggles in recent weeks, the spirit within the squad remains strong.
“Right now, we all understand the position we’re in and what it means emotionally to play games like this,” Kelly explained. “It’s not easy, but this is a family-based club — there’s that kind of environment here. No matter what we go through, the team stays united and compact, and we look after each other.”
Facing Osimhen and Galatasaray’s Firepower
Inevitably, attention turned to the man who could cause Juventus the most damage on Wednesday night — Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen. Kelly acknowledged the Nigerian’s quality but promised a different approach this time around.
“We understand the kind of player we’re up against. Apart from the first leg, we know that a lot of chances were created,” he said. “We’ve worked hard and tried different things in training — that’s what we need to do. We have to start the game strongly and aim for a result that’s very different from the one in Istanbul. I hope to perform at a high level — that’s what I want to do.”
Learning from Recent Mistakes
Juventus’ recent defensive lapses have been well documented, and Kelly did not shy away from acknowledging that concern.
“The way we conceded those goals is something no player likes to see,” he admitted. “You have to pay special attention to those moments in open play and in duels. Experienced players like us, especially in the Champions League, know these things can happen. We have to forget that match, but also recognise the period we’re going through and deal with it.”
Pride in Wearing the Shirt
Despite the turbulent form, Kelly reflected with pride on his experience since joining Juventus, emphasising how much he values the opportunity to wear the famous black and white shirt.
“My time at Juve has been exceptional. I’m proud and honoured to play for such a club,” he said. “From the very start, I managed to settle in quickly. Being part of a club like this gives you the chance to improve — that’s how it should be. I always try to focus on the details to get better, and at the same time, mentality is key when you play for a team like Juventus.”
