Lobotka

Lobotka Blow Deepens Napoli’s Midfield Crisis Ahead of Juventus Clash

Antonio Conte’s Napoli face a full-blown midfield emergency ahead of their upcoming showdown with Juventus, following the injury to Stanislav Lobotka. Calciomercato report that the Slovak midfielder pulled up during the warm-up of Napoli’s Coppa Italia tie against Cagliari, later won on penalties, after experiencing discomfort in the posterior tibial muscle of his left leg.

Packed Treatment Room

Lobotka’s setback adds to a growing injury list that already includes long-term absentees Frank Zambo Anguissa, Kevin De Bruyne, and Billy Gilmour. All three midfielders remain sidelined, further limiting Conte’s options in the centre of the pitch.

McTominay the Only Certainty

The one reliable name Conte can count on is Scott McTominay. The Scottish international is expected to anchor the midfield in a deeper, more defensive role — a position where his work rate and physicality will be crucial against Juve’s pressing game.

Three Tactical Alternatives

But who partners McTominay in such depleted circumstances? Conte has three main options, none of which involves a natural central midfielder.

– Eljif Elmas: The most experienced alternative, though naturally more of an attacking midfielder than a holding player. His tactical discipline could, however, offer some balance.

– Vergara: The young academy product impressed against Cagliari and could be handed another opportunity. While still raw, his energy and technical quality make him a viable short-term solution.

– Juan Jesus: The veteran defender could be pushed into midfield if Conte opts for added defensive solidity, a role he has occasionally filled in his career.

Conte will have to choose between creativity, balance, and defensive structure — but whichever path he takes, the trip to Turin will test Napoli’s depth and resilience like few matches this season.
