Juventus Closing In on Sporting Director Appointment: Is Ottolini Set to Return?

With the winter transfer window fast approaching, Juventus are preparing for key decisions off the pitch as well as on it. The Bianconeri still lack a sporting director, but a final decision on the appointment is expected soon — and former Genoa executive Marco Ottolini remains the leading candidate.

IlBianconero report how Saturday’s trip to Pisa will mark the final match of Juventus’ 2025 campaign. As the January market looms, the club knows that, despite limited spending capacity, it must remain alert to any opportunities to strengthen particularly in midfield — and perhaps on the right flank. With the league table beginning to take shape, the need for strategic reinforcement is becoming more evident.

A Key Vacancy Still Unfilled

The real question, however, is who will lead Juventus’ transfer operations. The club has been without a sporting director since the summer, a role temporarily covered by Damien Comolli, who in November also became the club’s CEO. This gap in the organisational structure has become increasingly noticeable — not only in terms of practical management but also for the club’s external image and credibility within the football market. The situation, though, appears to be nearing resolution.

Ottolini Leads the Race

According to the latest indications, Juventus are expected to finalise their choice shortly, with Marco Ottolini emerging as the clear frontrunner. The 1980-born executive left Genoa on 31 October but had already been approached earlier in the year, showing a strong willingness to return for a second spell in Turin.

During his previous tenure with Juventus, Ottolini joined in 2018 as a scout after a stint at Belgian side Anderlecht. He spent three seasons in the club’s scouting department before taking charge of managing the players loaned out by the club at the start of the 2021/22 campaign. That experience lasted only a year, as he accepted Genoa’s offer in 2022, contributing to their technical project until his recent departure.

Decision Imminent

Now, just over three years after leaving, Ottolini could once again be heading back to the Continassa. Juventus are ready to make their move, and barring any surprises, the decision on the new sporting director looks set to be made in the coming days — possibly paving the way for Ottolini’s official return to the Bianconeri.
