Juventus Without Pillars — Spalletti’s Emergency Plan, the Cornerstone, and Individual Conversations Already Under Way

Tuttosport's Paolo Pirisi Traces the Manager's Response to Crisis in Three Chapters — a Return to Three at the Back, Individual Meetings With Key Players, and Kolo Muani's Need for Support as the Structural Problem That Underpins Everything

Spalletti

Luciano Spalletti was left dumbfounded, yes. And understandably so. He had felt something similar — that same sense of helplessness — in the previous season too, after the defeat in Istanbul against Galatasaray, when he expected a reaction at the Allianz Stadium four days later against Como. Instead Juventus came away from that match broken, and Spalletti retrospectively attributed the non-performance to Champions League fatigue and the mental weight of the return leg. This time, however, even that limited mitigation does not hold. The truncated rest after Vigo was a factor, certainly — but in October the weight of individual matches is considerably lighter than it would be in February. What Spalletti encountered against Lazio was something more fundamental and more alarming: the total mental fragility of his squad, combined with a worrying crisis of technical and tactical identity.

From the start of the season, match by match and sometimes between the first and second halves of the same game, he has tried different configurations in search of the perfect shape for his Juventus. He has found, repeatedly, a squad that has not offered concrete solutions to the problems: too many injuries, too many offensive wide players relative to their collective effectiveness, and the persistent inability of Kolo Muani to hold the attacking line alone.

The Return to Three at the Back — Signalled to the Players as a Requirement

The first tactical chapter is not science fiction, and nor is it unprecedented: after the Reggio Emilia collapse last season, Spalletti had returned to a back three to protect the defensive phase. The signal being sent to the players from within the Continassa now is the same — a back three is being communicated as the new structural requirement. His own post-match framing had apparently downplayed tactical dimensions as a priority — “it becomes useless to talk about a specific department or a system of play; rhythm, spirit and heart come first” — but the practical action being taken at the Continassa points in a different direction. From now until at least the November international break, Spalletti will attempt to give shape and stability to this request for defensive balance, rebuilding from the foundations upward.

Kolo Muani Needs Support — The Second Chapter

The second chapter — “Capitolo attacco: Kolo Muani ha bisogno di sostegno” — elaborates on the structural attacking problem that has been visible since the season began. The French striker, rated “impalpable” after Sunday’s 0-3, cannot be expected to anchor the attacking line in isolation. The two-striker experiment against Celta Vigo — González alongside him, or Woltemade — showed that the system produces goals and energy when a second attacking presence occupies the second centre-back. Against Lazio, without that partner functioning from the start, Kolo Muani was isolated and effectively nullified. The case for a January centre-forward signing crystallises further with every game in which the striker plays without adequate support.

Individual Conversations With Key Players — the Cornerstone Spalletti Is Returning To

The third chapter — “Spalletti a colloquio con i giocatori cardine” — is the most practically significant piece of intelligence. The post-match promise to self-analyse his relationship with the squad is not remaining on the level of words: individual conversations with the key players have already begun. Spalletti, according to Pirisi, is choosing dialogue as the primary instrument for exiting an undeniably emergency situation. The question of whether this week’s players are following him — the most alarming thing he said after Lazio — is being addressed directly, one player at a time, in the privacy of the Continassa, before Wednesday’s Rennes match begins the answer on the pitch.
