Douglas Luiz’s return to the Premier League has not been without challenges. After leaving Juventus for Nottingham Forest, the Brazilian midfielder has opened up about his struggles with injuries, frequent managerial changes, and adapting to new training methods.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Luiz said:
“There have been a lot of changes, and it’s difficult both mentally and physically. Since I arrived at Forest, there have been three different managers, and it’s hard to find a way to be in shape because they all have different mentalities. When there’s a change, the game plan changes and so does the style of training. Some managers prefer lighter sessions, others like them to be more intense, and that was difficult for my body at the beginning.”
“Now I have to really focus on my fitness. I’ve changed the way I think about how to recover. I’ve learned that every training session and every day counts if you want to stay fit and perform well in the Premier League. I’m working closely with the staff here to get back to my best level.”
Luiz also spoke about the physical demands of adapting to new methods in a short period.
“Sometimes it’s not just the body but also the mind that gets tired. When you change cities, leagues, and playing styles, it takes time. I’ve learned to listen to my body more and rest when I need to. Now I’m trying to build everything again — physically, mentally, and technically.”
The former Juventus midfielder then reflected on his time in Turin, calling it one of the most difficult years of his career.
“I had a difficult year at Juventus, with many injuries and disappointments. There were moments when I just couldn’t find my rhythm. I wanted to help more, but every time I got close to being fit again, something happened.”
“Now I’m really happy. I’m at a good club, a big club, with many friends, and I’m happy to be here. For the good of the club and for myself, I hope to find a way to stay fit and contribute as much as I can.”
