Former Juventus coach Fabio Capello shared his insights on the recent changes at the club during an interview at the WEmbrace Awards. Capello discussed the appointment of Igor Tudor as the new manager, the team’s playing style, and the future of the club under sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli.
Tudor’s Impact on Juventus
Capello, who coached Tudor as a player, expressed confidence in the new manager’s ability to understand the Juventus environment. He believes Tudor has clear ideas and will depend on how he motivates the players and positions them on the field. Capello stated, “It won’t be a team set up to just do the bare minimum, but it will be more free and able to transmit something different.”
The former coach emphasized that Juventus has been playing in a restrained manner so far, and Tudor’s approach could bring a positive change. He added, “Teams that play well or so-so, but free: until now Juventus has played so-so and muzzled.”
The Importance of Results
Capello highlighted the significance of results for top clubs like Milan, Juventus, and Inter. He explained, “In teams like Milan, Juve, and Inter, the result is what counts most. If after a year, not even finished, you don’t win, you’re not good, they send you away. The result is fundamental.” He acknowledged that while there’s talk about beautiful play and theories, ultimately, the result is what matters.
Vlahovic’s Role
Regarding striker Dusan Vlahovic, Capello was adamant about his importance to the team. “It’s mathematical, he can’t leave Vlahovic out, who is one of the most important players,” Capello stated. He advised that the team needs to get closer to the penalty area to provide Vlahovic with more scoring opportunities, despite the player not having the softest touch.
Juventus’ Future and Giuntoli’s Position
Capello also commented on the club’s future and the role of sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli. He believes Giuntoli is facing significant challenges and will be evaluating potential coaches suitable for Juventus after assessing Tudor’s performance.
Capello acknowledged that Giuntoli made a mistake in good faith with Thiago Motta, as everyone believed he was a high-level coach, but it didn’t work out as expected. He emphasized the importance of Giuntoli’s next decision, stating, “The choice must be very carefully evaluated, hoping it goes well, because otherwise they’ll dismiss him too. There’s no mercy in football.”
