AC Milan are looking to strengthen their defence in January, and one of the names on their list is Juventus centre-back Federico Gatti, who is currently sidelined with a knee injury.
Massimiliano Allegri is keen to bring in a new defender during the winter transfer window, and Milan are exploring multiple options to find a suitable player available on loan. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Gatti is among the profiles being considered — a player Allegri knows well and shares an excellent relationship with from their time together in Turin.
Gatti’s injury and return date
Gatti, born in 1998, is not believed to be on Juventus’ transfer list, though his future playing time under Luciano Spalletti remains to be seen once he recovers. The defender suffered a medial meniscus injury in the Coppa Italia clash against Udinese on 1 December, which required surgery. His return is expected around mid-January.
His season so far
Before his injury, Gatti had made 14 appearances for Juventus across all competitions this season, totalling 1,107 minutes and scoring twice — once in Serie A against Udinese and once in the Champions League against Villarreal with a spectacular overhead kick. Although not an undisputed starter, his performances have been consistent, and Juventus are unlikely to consider his departure, particularly given their limited defensive options.
Milan’s alternatives
In addition to Gatti, Milan are monitoring several other potential targets. Among them is former Inter defender Milan Škriniar, now captain and an undisputed starter at Fenerbahçe, making a move unlikely. Another name on the list is Eric Dier of Monaco, although the Englishman has struggled with two significant injuries this season.
For now, Gatti’s situation remains one to watch closely, with more clarity expected as the January transfer window gathers pace.
