Juventus are set for a Champions League campaign full of intriguing reunions as they face several clubs featuring ex-Bianconeri players. The draw in Monte Carlo has revealed eight group stage opponents, ensuring Tudor’s squad will contend with familiar faces across Europe.
European Nights of Nostalgia
In the upcoming group stage, Juventus will host Borussia Dortmund, Benfica, Sporting, and Pafos in Turin. Away matches will take them to Real Madrid, Villarreal, Bodo/Glimt, and Monaco. Several of these teams are home to former Juventus players, adding drama and storyline to each fixture.
Huijsen Returns with Real Madrid
One of the most anticipated encounters will be against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, where Dean Huijsen now plays. The Dutch-born, Spanish-naturalized defender arrived at Juventus in 2022 and made only one senior appearance before a loan to Roma. He was sold to Bournemouth and then moved to Madrid after the Spanish giants activated his €60 million release clause.
Monaco Welcomes Pogba and Zakaria
Juventus will also face Monaco, reuniting with Paul Pogba and Denis Zakaria. Pogba, whose second stint in Turin ended after a doping suspension, recently joined the Monaco squad. Zakaria, who impressed with a debut goal in 2022, departed Juventus within a year after struggling to secure his place. Both add extra intrigue to the fixture at Stade Louis II.
Emre Can Leads Dortmund
In the match against Borussia Dortmund, Juventus fans will recognize Emre Can, who joined their ranks in 2018 after time at Liverpool. Can contributed during Allegri’s tenure but found opportunities limited under Sarri. His move to Dortmund in January 2020 brought a fresh start, and he remains a pivotal part of their squad.
Revenge Against Villarreal and Reunion with Veiga
The clash with Villarreal presents a chance for Juventus to avenge their 2021/22 Champions League exit. Villarreal recently signed Renato Veiga, who spent six months at Juventus in early 2025 on loan from Chelsea. After stabilizing the defence during an injury crisis, Veiga returned to London at season’s end.
Barrenechea Anchors Benfica Midfield
As Juventus again face Benfica, the Portuguese side features Enzo Barrenechea, another ex-Juventus player. The Argentine midfielder debuted with the first team in the 2022/23 season. He was part of the deal that brought Douglas Luiz to Turin but quickly found himself loaned to Valencia and then Benfica, where he has become a regular starter.
