Juventus Midfield Lacks Quality: Nico Gonzalez Highlights the Need for Tonali

Nico

Under Igor Tudor’s leadership, Juventus have undergone significant tactical changes, including a shift to a three-man defense, a more vertical playing style, and the repositioning of Nico Gonzalez. While these adjustments have brought some improvements, they’ve also exposed critical weaknesses in the midfield—weaknesses that may require drastic action in the upcoming transfer market.

Nico Gonzalez’s Role Under Tudor

Tudor has restored Nico Gonzalez to his preferred position on the right flank, slightly deeper than where he was deployed under former coach Thiago Motta. This adjustment has allowed the Argentine to be more involved in Juventus’ build-up play, touching the ball more frequently and contributing to the team’s overall dynamics. Despite missing out on scoring opportunities—thanks in part to a brilliant save by Roma’s goalkeeper Mile Svilar—Gonzalez’s presence has been impactful in the new system.

Midfield Limitations Exposed

While Gonzalez has adapted well to his new role, his positioning has also highlighted deficiencies in Juventus’ midfield. The current setup includes Weston McKennie and Timothy Weah for pace, Khephren Thuram for physicality, and Manuel Locatelli for structure. However, it lacks creativity and technical quality—attributes that were expected from players like Koopmeiners, Douglas Luiz, and Fagioli but have not materialized due to various setbacks.

Why Tonali is Key

In recent matches against Genoa and Roma, Gonzalez’s attempts at vertical passes and interplay with forwards have underscored the need for a higher level of midfield quality. Calciomercato report that Juventus are now reflecting on how sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli can address this issue in the summer transfer window. One name stands out: Sandro Tonali.

The Newcastle midfielder is Juventus’ top target to revitalize their midfield. Tonali’s technical ability and vision make him an ideal solution to the club’s creative shortcomings. Securing his signature will depend on Juventus qualifying for next season’s Champions League—a prerequisite for funding such a high-profile move.

The Plan for Tonali

Tonali’s contract with Newcastle runs until 2028, and the English club invested nearly €60 million to acquire him from Milan in 2023. Juventus would need at least that amount—or possibly €70 million—to initiate negotiations. Giuntoli has already established connections with Newcastle through past dealings, such as signing Lloyd Kelly for €17 million during the winter transfer window.

Reports suggest that Juventus have engaged in indirect contact with Tonali and hopes nostalgia for Italy might sway him. While Tonali isn’t actively seeking a return, the idea occasionally crosses his mind. To sweeten the deal, Juventus might include players like Federico Gatti, Douglas Luiz, or Dusan Vlahovic as part of a potential swap.

Alternative Options

If Tonali proves unattainable, Juventus could turn their attention to Ederson from Atalanta as a secondary option. However, Tonali remains their priority due to his proven ability to elevate midfield performance at the highest level.
