Juventus have begun preliminary discussions over a possible contract extension for Weston McKennie, whose current deal expires at the end of the season. The American midfielder has become a key figure under Luciano Spalletti, but his long-term future in Turin remains uncertain.
Under Spalletti, only Pierre Kalulu has featured more regularly than McKennie. La Gazzetta dello Sport (via IlBianconero) report how the 26-year-old has started every match so far this season — ten in total across all competitions — operating variously as an attacking midfielder, wide player or central pivot. His versatility and work rate have made him indispensable, and he has repaid his coach’s trust with two important goals in the Champions League.
Temptation from MLS
Despite his consistent performances, speculation over McKennie’s future persists. From 1 January, he will be free to negotiate with other clubs, and several teams from Major League Soccer are believed to be monitoring his situation closely. The prospect of a return home is said to appeal to the Texas-born player, particularly with the 2026 World Cup set to take place in the United States.
First renewal contacts
Both Juventus and McKennie are expected to keep the situation calm in January, with neither party eager to force a decision. For sporting director Damien Comolli, replacing such a reliable and versatile player mid-season would be difficult.
Talks have already taken place between the club and the player’s representatives to explore whether an agreement can still be reached. A similar scenario unfolded in the summer of 2024, when a renewal appeared close before collapsing over financial terms.
Financial differences remain
The main sticking point once again concerns salary. Juventus would like to keep McKennie but only under strict financial conditions. The player currently earns around €3 million per year, while his entourage are pushing for a deal closer to the club’s top earners.
For now, discussions remain open, with Juventus hopeful of narrowing the gap and securing the future of one of Spalletti’s most trusted players.
