Midfield Reinforcements on Juventus’ January Wish List

Start

La Gazzetta dello Sport report how Juventus continue to struggle with their midfield, which has long been considered the team’s weak spot due to a lack of quality. Beyond individual skills, Juventus are missing reliable backup options for their starting central midfield pairing of Locatelli and Thuram. With McKennie transitioning to a wider role and Koopmeiners repositioned as a centre-back, Juventus’ management is actively seeking reinforcement in the upcoming January transfer window.

The primary target is a midfield “brain”—a player who can bring leadership, tactical intelligence, and drive to the centre of the pitch. The frontrunner for this role is Pierre-Emile Højbjerg from Olympique Marseille. Højbjerg, valued for his leadership and experience, is not a classic deep-lying playmaker but a midfield soldier who can effectively guide and stabilise the team. His ability to lead aligns well with coach Luciano Spalletti’s requirements. However, negotiations are complicated by the fact that Højbjerg is a key player for Marseille, coached by Roberto De Zerbi, so securing his transfer may prove challenging.

As a secondary option, Juventus are considering Adrian Bernabé of Parma, a Spaniard known for his thoughtful playmaking, technical finesse, and shooting ability—qualities that closely match Spalletti’s ideal midfielder, similar in style to players like Pizarro and Lobotka. The major hurdle here is the cost of acquiring Bernabé, which may be significant.

Juventus are also scouting for reinforcements on the flanks, especially on the right side. Targets include Molina from Atletico Madrid and Malo Gusto from Chelsea. Gusto, a French talent born in 2003, has impressed despite not being a guaranteed starter at Chelsea, showing promise with his pace and ability to contribute both offensively and defensively.
