New Look Juventus: ‘Everything Depends on Koopmeiners’ as Spalletti Plans 4-3-3 Revolution

Start

Juventus under Luciano Spalletti are considering a tactical shift to a 4-3-3 formation that would mark a clear change from the three-man defence system it has traditionally used. This adjustment aims to rejuvenate the team’s defensive structure and midfield dynamics, especially with the flexibility that versatile player Teun Koopmeiners offers.

The defensive line could see Koopmeiners deployed as a central defender alongside players such as Gatti, Kalulu, Rugani, and Kelly, depending on the availability of injured star Gleison Bremer. Koopmeiners has experience playing in various positions, including a role in the back three, and Spalletti is exploring placing him in the centre-back partnership.

Right-back duties could increasingly fall to Kalulu, while Cambiaso remains the preferred left-back, although Juan Cabal and Kelly can also fill these wing-back roles given their versatility.

Midfield options are more constrained, with Manuel Locatelli as the prime candidate for the regista or deep-lying playmaker role. Koopmeiners could feature in midfield too, alongside the likes of Khephren Thuram, who plays well as a box-to-box midfielder, Weston McKennie, and Fabio Miretti, who has previous experience in the regista role.

The attack is expected to remain relatively unchanged in personnel, with Dusan Vlahovic established as the primary striker accompanied by Kenan Yildiz and Francisco Conceicao on the wings. Edon Zhegrova could emerge as a starter or key substitute as the season progresses.

Possible line-ups with Koopmeiners in different roles are:

– With Koopmeiners as centre-back: Di Gregorio; Kalulu, Gatti (Bremer when fit), Koopmeiners, Cambiaso; McKennie, Locatelli, Thuram; Conceicao, Vlahovic, Yildiz.

– With Koopmeiners as midfielder: Di Gregorio; Kalulu, Gatti (Bremer when fit), Kelly, Cambiaso; Koopmeiners, Locatelli, Thuram; Conceicao, Vlahovic, Yildiz.

– With Koopmeiners as left-back: Di Gregorio; Cambiaso, Gatti (Bremer when fit), Kelly, Koopmeiners; McKennie, Locatelli, Thuram; Conceicao, Vlahovic, Yildiz.

This potential transition aligns with Spalletti’s preferred style, proven during his title-winning stint at Napoli, focusing on possession control and fluid midfield interplay.
