Juventus are preparing for a sweeping transformation, both on the pitch and behind the scenes, with the tantalizing prospect of reuniting the legendary “BBC” defensive trio-Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini, and Andrea Barzagli-in new roles at the club. As rumours swirl about Antonio Conte possibly returning as head coach, the club’s management is also strategizing to bring back the spirit and leadership that defined a golden era for the Bianconeri.
The BBC: A Decade of Dominance
Between 2012 and 2020, Bonucci, Barzagli, and Chiellini formed the backbone of one of football’s most formidable defences, helping Juventus secure nine consecutive Serie A titles. Their chemistry and tactical intelligence became the hallmark of Juventus’ success, making the “BBC” an iconic name in Italian football history.
Chiellini’s Leadership and Bonucci’s Ambitions
Giorgio Chiellini, already serving as Juventus’ Head of Football Institutional Relations, is expected to take on a more central role in the club’s hierarchy as part of a broader reshuffle. Recent reports confirm that Chiellini has met with Leonardo Bonucci and sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli to discuss Bonucci’s potential return to Turin, possibly as part of the first-team staff-especially if Antonio Conte is appointed as head coach.
Bonucci himself has openly discussed (as quoted by Calciomercato) the possibility of returning to Juventus in a non-playing role. Reflecting on a previous offer from Conte, Bonucci revealed:
“In the summer we talked, I was interested in his new ideas and he often discusses things with me, he also asked about my intentions. A role on the staff? There was this possibility, but I wasn’t ready, I thanked him and needed to take a break after a tough year with six difficult months in Germany and then in Turkey, I was exhausted.”
Speaking at Imola during the Formula 1 Grand Prix, Bonucci shared his vision for the future:
“The idea is to start coaching as soon as possible, I’m studying. The idea is to coach a big club, but you go step by step. The responsibilities will obviously be different compared to when I was a player. Return to Juventus? The goal is to proceed step by step, one day the dream would be to coach Juventus or the national team. You always aim for the top, right? Everyone knows: I’ve always been a Juventus fan and for me that is the highest aspiration. Today I’m enjoying the path I’ve started with the Under-20 national team and then we’ll see what the future holds.”
Barzagli’s Potential Return
While Chiellini’s role is set to become even more influential and Bonucci is being considered for a position on the first-team staff, Andrea Barzagli could also return to Juventus as a youth coach. Barzagli previously worked with Maurizio Sarri’s staff in the 2019/20 season and was recently involved with Italy’s youth national teams. Although he nearly joined Fiorentina’s Under-15 squad last year, the move didn’t materialize, and now Juventus may offer him another opportunity.
