Sacchi: “David and Openda Are Not the Right Strikers for Spalletti”

Arrigo Sacchi has delivered a sharp critique of Juventus’ attacking options following their frustrating draw against Lecce, arguing that neither Jonathan David nor Loïs Openda fit the mould of forwards suited to Luciano Spalletti’s game plan.

The former AC Milan coach reflected on the disappointing result, which ended Juventus’ run of victories and drew boos from frustrated home supporters. Despite the Bianconeri’s dominance and the number of chances created, Sacchi believes the match exposed key weaknesses — particularly up front.

Sacchi’s Analysis

“The draw with Lecce is proof that nothing comes easy in Serie A,” Sacchi wrote in La Gazzetta dello Sport. “Everyone expected Juventus to claim a fourth straight win, yet Lecce, with courage, hard work, and a bit of luck, walked away with a result that felt like an upset. This is a setback for Spalletti’s team — a step back at a time when they needed to move forward.”

Sacchi criticised David’s failed penalty attempt, calling it “incomprehensible” given his current goal drought. “How can a centre-forward who hasn’t scored since the opening matchday take a penalty like that — with a chip that wasn’t even a proper chip?” he remarked.

He also pointed to Openda’s late miss at the 95th minute, when the Belgian fired over an open goal after Yildiz’s shot had rebounded off the post.

“The main issue is clear to anyone watching,” Sacchi continued. “Juventus lack weight and sharpness in attack. David missed from the spot, and Openda fluffed an easy chance from close range. These are not the sort of attacking players Spalletti needs for his style of football. He wants combination play, intensity, and consistency — and he’ll need time, and perhaps some help from the club, to get that.”

The Need for Reinforcements

Sacchi suggested that Juventus’ management may have to step in during the transfer window to strengthen the squad in key areas. “To play the kind of football Spalletti wants, you need players who fit his ideas and are willing to sacrifice for the system. Otherwise,” he warned, “you risk preaching in the desert. The spark Juventus need can only come through the right moves in the market.”
