Sandro Tonali Opens Up About His Future: Milan Return, Newcastle, and Juventus Rumours

In a recent interview with La Repubblica’s ‘U’ insert, Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali shared his thoughts on his career, his time in England, and the possibility of a return to AC Milan. The Italian international, who left Milan for Newcastle in a high-profile move, offered insights into his current situation and future aspirations.

Tonali began by discussing his relationship with tennis star Jannik Sinner, revealing that they have maintained contact since Sinner’s visit to Milanello. “No one in tennis is at his level. Mentally, he’s a rock, impossible to move. Many people try to attack him, but he’s a model. An Italian reaching that level can only be criticized by those who are envious,” Tonali said, praising Sinner’s achievements.

Addressing his departure from Milan, where he was seen as a potential captain and symbol of the club, Tonali reflected on the nature of modern football. “It’s difficult, you can’t decide alone. It’s a world with a lot of money: for players and clubs. When you say no, there must also be a no from the club. In negotiations, it’s difficult for there to be two nos or two yeses: there’s always a yes and a no,” he explained. Tonali acknowledged that in big teams with significant financial stakes, the concept of a club ‘bandiera’ (flag-bearer) becomes utopian.

When asked about his experience in England, Tonali emphasized that it has enriched him beyond just financially. “I’ve grown and discovered a new country, a new football, and a new language. I have no regrets,” he stated. Intriguingly, Tonali admitted, “The idea of returning to Milan one day is there, but it’s not the thought when I wake up in the morning.”

Tonali also touched on his connection to Milan legend Franco Baresi, noting their shared birthday of May 8th, albeit 40 years apart. He fondly recalled the few times he wore the captain’s armband for Milan, mentioning specific matches against Empoli, Torino in the Coppa Italia, and Chelsea in the Champions League.

Addressing recent rumors of a potential move to Juventus, Tonali was clear: “My agents and I have never spoken about it. And I know from experience that if you don’t reach that stage, there’s nothing concrete.” He affirmed his commitment to Newcastle, stating, “I’m comfortable with myself here, I’ve found my path, and there’s no need to disrupt it again. I want to win for the Newcastle fans, and we’ll soon have our first opportunity at Wembley.”
