After finally earning their first European victory of the season in dramatic fashion, Juventus return to domestic duty on Saturday evening looking to revive a faltering Serie A campaign. Juventus’ Struggles at Home

Juventus’ midweek Champions League triumph over Bodo/Glimt provided a brief moment of relief in what has been an inconsistent season. Goals from Lois Openda and Jonathan David sealed a crucial 3-2 win in Norway, moving the Turin giants back into contention for a knockout place. Yet, despite improvement in Europe, Luciano Spalletti’s side find themselves treading water in Serie A.

A frustrating draw with bottom-placed Fiorentina last weekend underlined Juve’s biggest weakness this term: an inability to convert dominance into victory. No club across Europe’s top five leagues has drawn more matches since the start of last season – 21 out of their last 50 league games have ended level. The lack of cutting edge in attack and a habit of dropping points against lower opponents have left Spalletti with urgent repair work to do.

Currently sitting seventh in the table with 20 points, this is one of Juventus’ poorest starts to a campaign in over two decades. Their modest tally of 15 goals represents their lowest return after 12 matches since 1999, a stat that perfectly captures the blunt edge of their forward line.

Cagliari’s Battle Against the Odds

For Cagliari, the story is all too familiar. Sitting just above the relegation zone with 12 points from as many games, Fabio Pisacane’s team remain under constant pressure to secure results, particularly away from home. The Rossoblu have mustered only a handful of points on their travels, and history strongly favours Juventus in this fixture.

Indeed, Cagliari have beaten the Bianconeri just once in their last 27 Serie A encounters. Their last visit to the Allianz Stadium ended in a respectable 1-1 draw, but a year ago Juve knocked them out of the Coppa Italia with a comprehensive 4-0 victory. For the visitors, a repeat of last season’s frustration would be all too easy to imagine.

Pisacane’s men showed both promise and fragility in last week’s thrilling 3-3 draw with Genoa. Gennaro Borrelli’s two headed goals had seemingly sealed a vital win before a defensive lapse cost them two precious points at the death. That draw extended Cagliari’s winless streak to eight games, a run stretching back to September. The forthcoming schedule offers no respite either, with Juventus, Napoli, and Roma all on the horizon.

Team News

Spalletti is expected to revert to his trusted starters after rotating the squad in midweek. Khephren Thuram and Kenan Yildiz, both rested in Norway, are anticipated to reclaim their starting spots. Defenders Bremer and Daniele Rugani remain sidelined through injury, alongside striker Arkadiusz Milik, who continues his long-term recovery.

Having been benched against Bodo/Glimt, Dusan Vlahovic will be eager to lead the line again. The Serbian forward boasts a prolific record against Cagliari, scoring eight times in 11 Serie A meetings. However, competition for the centre-forward role is fierce, with both Openda and David pushing to retain their places after their midweek heroics.

Cagliari, meanwhile, travel with a thin squad. Andrea Belotti is ruled out with a serious knee injury, while Ze Pedro and Luca Mazzitelli also remain unavailable. Yerry Mina is a major doubt after picking up a knock last week, likely forcing Adam Obert to start in central defence. Borrelli, following his brace against Genoa, should spearhead the attack once again.

Probable Starting XI’s

Juventus v Cagliari

Juventus (3-4-2-1): Di Gregorio; Kalulu, Kelly, Koopmeiners; Cambiaso, Locatelli, Thuram, Kostic; McKennie, Yildiz; Vlahovic.

Cagliari (3-5-2): Caprile; Zappa, Luperto, Obert; Palestra, Deiola, Prati, Folorunsho, Felici; Esposito, Borrelli.

Prediction

On current form, this fixture looks tailor-made for Juventus to grind out a routine but vital victory. Cagliari’s poor away record and defensive fragility make them vulnerable, especially against a Juve side desperate to steady their domestic form. It may not be a match overflowing with flair, but efficiency could be enough for Spalletti’s men.

Prediction: Juventus 2-0 Cagliari
