Spalletti to DAZN after Juventus-Roma: “Sometimes we still switch off. Zhegrova doesn’t know how to do the defensive phase”

Luciano Spalletti shared an honest post-match analysis on DAZN following Juventus’ hard-fought win over Roma at the Allianz Stadium. The Juventus manager expressed satisfaction with the result but also highlighted areas where the team still needs to improve.

“I’m happy because winning matches like these is an achievement,” Spalletti said. “They’re very organised, they play at the pace of a team that crushes you if you’re not good at keeping the ball and breaking forward. In the first half, we did that too little — they surrounded us from right to left, and we wasted a few opportunities to launch counterattacks. They did well to put us in difficulty; we were a bit timid in creating dangerous situations, but we stayed in the game, and the team showed substance.”

The coach then went into tactical detail, referring specifically to his players’ characteristics and development. “In midfield, it’s always the same issues — that’s the reason I came to manage this team. It seemed to have potential, with players who have clear qualities,” Spalletti explained. “The challenge is turning those qualities into something real. That’s what I said about Yildiz: it becomes 11 one-on-one situations, and if you don’t know how to free yourself, it’s hard to find the breakthrough. In the first half, we did it very little, but later we grew into the match and found spaces to press. We did that quite well overall. It’s a group of young players who listen and want to improve, though of course, there are specific traits. Zhegrova doesn’t know how to do the defensive phase; he doesn’t know when to press the opponent or make a tackle. A team like Roma has its own identity, and they’ll always find a weakness.”

Spalletti concluded by urging consistency, recognising the need for Juventus to sustain their intensity across full matches. “After the goal, our attitude changed — we wanted to make our qualities count, and in my opinion, we deserved to win,” he added. “We need to raise our level of consistency. With this constant pressing and one-on-one duels, there are many different situations to read. Sometimes we still switch off, we have pauses, and we’re not yet at the level of teams like Roma.”
