Szczesny: “I Played for Barcelona to Pay Juventus” – The Story Behind His Departure and Contract Resolution

Wojciech Szczesny has opened up about the turning point in his career — his departure from Juventus, an initial decision to retire from football, and the unexpected move that led him to Barcelona. Speaking to GQ Poland (as quoted by Calciomercato), the Polish goalkeeper revealed the behind-the-scenes details of his final months in Turin and his surprising return to elite competition.

From Retirement Plans to Barcelona’s Call

Szczesny admitted that he was prepared to call time on his career before Barcelona arrived with a proposal that reignited his motivation.

“Three days before officially announcing my retirement, I told Lewy that I didn’t want to play for any club… unless it was Barcelona,” he explained. “When they called me, they probably knew they could convince me quite easily. It’s not that I had lost my passion for football; I just wasn’t excited by the offers I received from several top clubs. It wasn’t about negotiating money — I simply didn’t want to play just for the sake of earning.”

Playing for a Year Without Pay

The Polish international went on to reveal a striking financial detail about his first season at the Camp Nou.

“I basically played my first season at Barcelona for free,” Szczesny said. “Everything I earned from the club was exactly the same amount I had to pay Juventus for terminating my contract early.”

The Agreement and Juventus Exit

Before his move to Barcelona, Szczesny had lost his starting place at Juventus following the arrival of Michele Di Gregorio. After seven seasons and eight trophies in Turin, he informed the club of his decision to terminate his contract a year before its original expiry.

While he wasn’t required to pay any penalties, both parties reached an amicable settlement that included a €2 million termination clause — coincidentally the same sum he went on to receive from Barcelona as his first-year salary.

Following Marc-André ter Stegen’s injury, Barcelona’s approach changed the course of Szczesny’s career, turning what appeared to be retirement into a remarkable new chapter in Spain.
