Vlahovic, McKennie and Kostic: The Juventus Paradox and Their Uncertain Future

Start

With Luciano Spalletti’s arrival in Turin, a curious paradox has emerged at Juventus. Players whose contracts are nearing expiration — Dusan Vlahovic, Weston McKennie and Filip Kostic — have suddenly become central figures in the team’s plans. While the club’s summer signings struggle for minutes, those with uncertain futures are proving indispensable on the pitch.

It’s an unexpected reversal. Typically, clubs are cautious with players whose contracts are running down, yet at Juventus, these footballers are among the most relied upon. Their current importance, however, raises fresh questions about what lies ahead for all three.

The Key Trio: Vlahovic, McKennie and Kostic

IlBianconero report that Vlahovic has become an undisputed starter under Spalletti. Even when not fully fit, he continues to lead the line, embodying the determination and presence that Juventus depend on. He has featured in 15 matches this season, totalling 755 minutes, and remains the focal point of the team’s attacking play.

McKennie has started the last six matches, working under three different coaches and in multiple roles — central midfielder, wide player, and even attacking midfielder under Spalletti. His adaptability has made him a vital component of the squad, amassing 14 appearances and 889 minutes so far.

Kostic’s situation, though slightly different, also reflects renewed trust. After struggling for game time under Igor Tudor, he’s now being reintegrated as a useful option on the left flank. With eight appearances and 251 minutes this season, the Serbian has regained purpose as a reliable alternative.

Spalletti has made it clear that contract situations will not influence his selections. “I have no instructions from the club regarding any player,” he stated in his first press conference. “I evaluate what I see and what the player intends to do.”

Vlahovic and Juventus: A Possible Renewal?

Among the trio, Vlahovic’s situation stands out. Once seen as certain to depart at the end of the season, the Serbian striker’s strong performances and visible contentment under Spalletti have reshaped the narrative. Club legend Giorgio Chiellini has even hinted that talks may reopen to explore the possibility of a contract extension.

While an agreement remains uncertain, Juventus are no longer resigned to losing Vlahovic. The option of separation in June is still on the table, but it is no longer the only one.

McKennie’s Ongoing Uncertainty

For McKennie, contract uncertainty is nothing new. Negotiations over a renewal stalled following the leadership changes at the club, with significant differences emerging over economic terms. Still, Spalletti values the American highly, and his consistent form could persuade the management to rethink their position.

McKennie has experienced several ups and downs during his time in Turin, and as history shows, his fortunes can shift quickly. What appears stable today may look very different in a few months.

Kostic’s Limited but Important Role

Kostic’s case is the most straightforward. After returning from his loan spell at Fenerbahce, his early-season exclusion baffled many. Now, his return to the fold makes sense: Juventus lack depth on the wings, and Kostic’s experience provides balance.

However, he remains the most likely among the expiring players to leave next summer. Discussions over his renewal are not currently a priority for Juventus. For now, his performances will determine whether he earns a final chance to extend his stay in Turin.

A Balancing Act for Juventus

Juventus face a delicate balancing act between short-term competitiveness and long-term planning. Spalletti’s pragmatic approach — choosing players based on form rather than contracts — has stabilised the team. Yet the club’s management will soon need to decide which of these key figures truly belong in the next chapter of the Juventus rebuild.
