Weston McKennie: “Spalletti is a brilliant coach” — The Juventus midfielder talks about his future

Weston McKennie attended an event organised by his charity foundation, McKennie’s Magical Youth Mission, in partnership with Salesiani per il sociale, where he took time to reflect on football, life in Turin, and his ongoing commitment to helping young people.

“I’m very happy to be here. I always love spending time with children — playing with them and putting a smile on their faces. Last year was a beautiful one, the time I spent with the kids and with everyone who helps me with the foundation. It’s been a wonderful day,” said the midfielder.

A vital win against Roma

Reflecting on Juventus’ recent success, McKennie highlighted the importance of their victory over Roma.
“It was a very important win for Juventus, for us, for the fans, and for the coach. There was a moment of difficulty, but now we’ve found our identity. Spalletti is a brilliant coach — he explains how to play, he knows how to coach players, and I really like him. Hopefully, we can get three more points against Pisa too.”

McKennie praised the Italy manager further, underlining Spalletti’s attention to detail and human touch. “He focuses on the little things, on details that often go unnoticed. He speaks individually with all the players, and in training he always asks for great sacrifice from everyone.”

On the Scudetto race

When asked about Juventus’ title ambitions, the American insisted on staying grounded.
“The Scudetto? We have to focus on ourselves and concentrate on the next match. We need to take it day by day without looking too far ahead.”

Six years in Turin

McKennie also reflected on his long spell in Italy, which has become an integral part of his life.
“I was talking about it with my father earlier and said, ‘Wow, I’ve been here for almost six years!’ Turin is a very important part of my life, so I want to do everything I can for the people who live here.”

Looking ahead to Pisa-Juventus

On his personal condition, McKennie assured fans he’s in good shape. “How am I doing? Good. We’ll see how the week goes — I hope to play.”

Milestone moment

With 200 appearances for Juventus, McKennie recognised how far he has come.
“I’m very happy — it’s an important moment for me, my family, and the people in America, but especially for me. It’s difficult to stay here and reach 200 appearances, but I did it. Luckily! (laughs).”

Growing leadership

Asked whether he feels like a leader after six years with the club, he replied modestly:
“Do I feel like a leader? I’m someone who wants to bring happiness and make my teammates smile, but on the pitch I do my work — running, sacrificing. Spalletti’s praise? It’s always nice when I receive compliments from the coach. I’m always ready to help the team, and hopefully we can finish the season in the best possible way.”

Preferred position and future plans

On his favourite position, he joked: “My favourite role? Being on the pitch! (laughs). But I like playing in the middle, as a number eight.”

Looking ahead to his contract situation, McKennie admitted things are not yet decided but expressed his wish to stay in Turin. “My contract expires in June? I leave those things to my agent. He talks to me about it, but hopefully I can stay here. We’ll see.”
