Frabotta: “Ronaldo Was a Daily Example – He Chewed Grass to Prove His Point to Sarri”

Former Juventus defender Gianluca Frabotta, now playing for Cesena, has revealed some fascinating behind-the-scenes moments from his time in Turin. Speaking in a recent interview, he recalled his debut experiences, the influence of star teammates, and the unforgettable professionalism of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Debut and Dybala’s Encouragement

“Before stepping onto the pitch for Milan versus Juve, I was in the tunnel, full of tension,” Frabotta told Il Corriere dello Sera (as quoted by ilbianconero) . “A teammate came up to me and said, ‘Gianlu, stay calm, you’re strong. Today you’ll have a great game, you’ll eat them alive.’ It was Dybala. He gave me incredible energy. I was surrounded by champions – Cristiano Ronaldo, Bonucci, Dybala, Chiellini, Buffon, just to name a few.”

Frabotta’s first vivid memory of Juventus goes back to Vinovo, the club’s training centre. “There’s a wall where the shirts of all youth players who made it to the first team are displayed. At the end, there’s a mirror with a message that says: ‘The next one to debut could be you.’ It’s a strong reminder of what’s possible.”

He made his Serie A debut on the final day of the season against Roma, his hometown club. “I used to play in the park beneath my building with footballs my dad gave me every Christmas. Playing against Roma felt like a dream. We had already won the league, and everyone on the bus was celebrating before the match – everyone except me and Zanimacchia. We were so anxious,” he laughed.

Gratitude to Pirlo

Frabotta expressed deep appreciation for Andrea Pirlo, the coach who gave him his first big break. “I’ll always be grateful to Pirlo,” he said. “He had faith in me and helped me manage the pressure. For his first match as a coach against Sampdoria, he made me a starter. I still remember the day before – I was on the motorway heading home when the team manager called me and told me to turn back because Pirlo wanted to talk. That’s when I learned I was going to start.”

Ronaldo’s Extraordinary Mentality

The defender described Cristiano Ronaldo as an “everyday example” of commitment and instinct. “One thing he did really stuck with me,” Frabotta explained. “During a tactical drill, Sarri was showing him some movements for set pieces. Ronaldo looked a bit irritated. He was different – he didn’t need to be told where to be; he could feel where the ball would end up.”

“To make his point, he grabbed some grass, chewed it, smelled it and said, ‘I like to understand the pitch, to feel where the ball will go.’ That’s the kind of mentality he had. Always switched on, always connected with the game.”

A Message to His Younger Self

Asked what he would say to the boy who trained at Vinovo years ago, Frabotta replied, “To be proud of what I’ve achieved and to keep dreaming. I went from playing under my apartment block with local kids to sharing the pitch with Cristiano Ronaldo. Why would I ever stop believing?”
