Juventus and Inter Weigh Up Cancelo Return

Start

The past is knocking again, but it may not find the door fully open. Joao Cancelo has re-emerged as one of the more intriguing names of the winter transfer window, a player who evokes strong memories in both Turin and Milan. Juventus and Inter are monitoring the situation, but both clubs are determined not to let nostalgia or emotion dictate their decisions.

According to the latest reports from Tuttosport (as quoted by IlBianconero), Jorge Mendes has put Cancelo’s name back on the table for Serie A, with the clear intention of bringing the Portuguese full-back back to European football after his spell in Saudi Arabia. His career has been marked by peaks of brilliance and moments of misunderstanding: at Inter, it was Luciano Spalletti who first saw his full potential, even if the project never truly found continuity. Juventus, for their part, enjoyed his quality on the right flank but eventually chose to cash in, paving the way for his move to Manchester City.

A Career of Highs and Unfinished Business

Cancelo’s trajectory has taken him to the very top of the game. Under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, he reached an elite level, becoming one of the most complete and versatile full-backs in Europe. Yet his journey then turned into a series of loans and moves, including spells at Bayern Munich and Al Hilal, without ever fully settling again.

The present now points towards a definitive separation from Saudi Arabia. Mendes is actively working behind the scenes, exploring different European destinations in search of a project that is both competitive on the pitch and sustainable from a financial standpoint. Serie A is just one of the possible routes, but the allure of a return to Italy remains strong for a player whose best football is still closely associated with the league.

Inter’s Cautious Approach

On the Inter side, the response so far has been cool and cautious. The Nerazzurri have listened to the proposal but have not given the green light. Concerns centre on Cancelo’s age and, above all, his very high salary, which does not fit with the parameters now imposed by the ownership. The club’s strategy is to prioritise internal solutions and investments with greater long-term perspective rather than short-term, high-cost moves.

For the moment, Cancelo is not considered a priority for Inter. The full-back position is being evaluated in a broader context, with an emphasis on sustainability and continuity rather than headline signings that could unbalance the wage structure.

Juventus Open, But Only on Their Terms

In Turin, the situation is more nuanced. The right flank is an area where Juventus recognise the need for potential upgrades, and Cancelo’s profile naturally appeals from a purely technical standpoint. However, any talk of a reunion comes with very strict conditions.

Juventus are open to the idea only if the financial framework changes drastically. A return would be possible solely in the event of a significant reduction in the player’s salary and an overall deal that falls within the club’s tightened economic parameters. Without such concessions, the idea of bringing Cancelo back would remain just that – an attractive notion rather than a concrete operation.

Market Opportunity or Simple Suggestion?

For now, Cancelo is back on the agenda but without any guarantees or fast tracks. Inter are watching from a distance, Juventus with cautious curiosity. Meanwhile, Mendes continues to work on multiple fronts, including options in Spain and the Premier League, in search of the right fit for his client.

The transfer market, however, has a habit of springing surprises. Deals that seem unlikely in January can take shape quickly if circumstances shift, and sometimes stories left unfinished do find a way to start again. Whether Cancelo’s Italian chapter will be reopened or remain a suggestion of the market will depend on how far clubs are willing to bend sporting ambition to meet financial reality.
